Rays To Sign Jose Molina

The Rays have reached a two-year, $4.5MM agreement with catcher Jose Molina, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com...

Molina is expected to be Jose Lobaton’s backup after starting a career-high 87 games behind the plate in 2013, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times...

Molina batted .233./.290/.304 in a career-best 313 plate appearance (99 games) for the Rays last season, his lowest offensive output in the past four years. However, the 38-year-old is regarded as one of the game’s best defensive catchers (although his lack of mobility resulted in 33 wild pitches and eight passed balls) and is an expert in the art of pitch-framing. Molina has also thrown out 38% of opposing base-stealers throughout his career.

Jose Molina is still in the league?

Every single catcher is getting too much money for too many years. When will the market fix the market?

Not picking on TDA here, but why does everybody who tries to submit a picture or a video have the same problem?

[2] Non-catchers are the new market inefficiency.

Molina was David Price's personal catcher last season. Maybe there is a long term contract in the works?

Yeah, I know. It's the Rays. But they have to spend YR's money on something.

I noticed for a while there that Molina and Lobaton were simply alternating games, Molina, Lobaton, Molina, Lobaton, Molina, Lobaton.

Words that have hopefully never appeared together before: "Jose Lobaton's backup".

If your son is left-handed, teach them to pitch.

If your son is right-handed, make them a catcher.

If your son is a Molina, they will be a catcher.

If your son is a left-handed Molina, the fabric of space-time will be torn and the universe will come to an end.

Or Benny Distefano will cease to be the answer to a trivia question. One or the other.

I originally read that as "simply alternating names."

Which works, too, of course.

If the three Molina Brothers all have several children, and if those children are also all Molinas and end up playing catcher in MLB at the same time, does that mean that all those Molinas will just be average catchers, because the context is also composed of Molina Cousins? - Brock Hanke

In the future, the word "catcher" falls into disuse. All MLB teams have a starting Molina and a backup Molina.

youse guys are ALWAYS (almost always) complaining about contracts - they are always too much $$$ or too long unless it is some sort of cheapo 1 year deal

who exactly is it you want the team to spend its money on? or do you just want the owners to not pay anyone good and just pocket the profit like with jim crane and jeff loria?

I think Team BTF would consist entirely of either pre-Arb, Arb, or Arb Buy-Out Extensions players. In other words, no one over 30. Except maybe former stars on one-year reclamation contracts like Dan Haren.

Gustavo Molina isn't even related to the famous catching Molinas, and he still became a catcher. The name is that strong.

[17] I just looked up all the Molinas in MLB history. Although Gustavo and Izzy were indeed catchers, Gabe, sadly, was not.

Wow, I thought Molina was a black hole this year, and even when he (a defense first catcher) has his worst offensive season in 4 years he STILL manages to out-OPS JP Arencibia (an defense last catcher)! Brutal...
