Red-hot Astros remain aggressive in their search for more pitching

The Astros remain interested in adding a starting pitcher and also are likely to pursue a left-handed reliever before the July 31 nonwaiver deadline, major-league sources say.

No trade is expected soon – trade discussions generally do not accelerate until after the amateur draft in June and sellers likely will maintain high asking prices until late July.

But the Astros, who began the season with the game’s third-best farm system, according to Baseball America, are in position to pursue virtually any player who becomes available.

The Pirates, currently in last place in the NL Central at 16-23, have two pitchers who intrigue the Astros, sources say – right-hander Gerrit Cole, who is under control through 2019, and left-handed closer Tony Watson, who is a free agent at the end of the season.

It is not yet clear if the Pirates will be sellers, or if they would be willing to move Cole. But with center fielder Andrew McCutchen batting only .206 with a .670 OPS, a trade of Cole might be the Pirates’ best chance of landing significant value in a season that looks increasingly lost.

Don't look now, but Charlie Morton is striking out over 10 per 9.

Cutch is washed up, Polanco has cratered, and Marte's out half the year. There goes Pittsburgh's biggest strength. But isn't Cole a lot more bathwater than baby? You don't trade potential top-line starters with 3 years of control because this year's bets didn't pan out.

The Giants should get on this, though. Shark, Moore, or a blockbuster for Cueto, who would fit right in on the Astros, might be just the thing. Steven Okert is an above average left-handed reliever. And it would be easy to sell as a reload rather than a rebuild, I think. Let's do it.

For the Pirates to trade Cole would be to announce to the world that they're finished contending for at least the next five years, and to be strategically consistent would have to come alongside trading every other player on the team that's within three years of free agency or over 25. Pirates fans, you can understand, will hear that as "the Pirates may or may not play another playoff game during my lifetime."

I don't see them moving in that direction until the whole thing falls apart and they lose 95 games. I think they'll desperately keep trying to patch the team up as it slowly sinks further into irrelevance.

Wouldn't that make him more baby than bathwater?

I'm curious as to which part you think people are getting rid of when the bathing process is complete.

what about Derek Fisher to the Braves for one of the Braves' AAA maybe ready for MLB pitchers, since the Braves have a surplus of young pitching and no OF with any skills to speak of, in AAA. If the master plan of Coppalella was to horde young pitching and convert the surplus for hitting talent, now is his chance.

You took the words right out of my mouth (as it were). Personally, I keep the baby.

Jason Vargas--he of the 5th highest WAR in the AL--remains very available. 5 and 1 with a 1.27 ERA in 10 starts since returning from TJ surgery. He's a cyborg!

With today's win, the Astros match the 2016 Cubs 29-12 start.

Luckily for my one year old - apparently - my wife handles the bathing. Let's not mention this to her, shall we?

Can't wait for the media to jump on that Astros band-wagon and cover them as they did the Cubs.

It's likely Houston will pass Chicago as 3rd largest US city sometime in the next two decades. But even before last season, the Cubs fan base probably exceeded the Astros' a hundredfold.

- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
HOHOHOHOHOHOHO

the media covers close to NOTHING in houston - the only, the ONLY time the astros ever got any national attention was when roger clemens first joined the astros in 04

the media ignored the astros in 05 when they won the freaking pennant - they did remember to mention, uh, jack bigwall and ray ozman amidst all the wailling about the absence of His Jeteriness

the astros only get on national tv if they play the freaking y*nkees and then it is like the yankees are playing some team from lufkin or something

and the astros would have this perfectly great starter they need if they would quit wasting steve devinski in the bullpen

That's CHRIS Devinski.
