Red Sox division title banner falls off truck; its return may cost them - The Boston Globe

Dopes. I’m sure the vendor just printed up a new one.

“We want to return it, we’re trying to do the right thing, but I’m not just going to hand it to them, know what I mean?” Iacuzzi said.

Asked if he wanted cash from the Red Sox, he said, “Yes, financial [compensation], maybe some tickets, we want something. We don’t know what we want. We want to return it, 100 percent, but we would like to get something.”

Iacuzzi didn’t have a specific asking price in mind as of Wednesday morning.

“We want to find out what the thing’s worth,” he said. “We don’t know.”

The Red Sox have won their last game of the year. This is the Curse of the Banner That Fell Off A Truck. We're doomed.

Seriously though assuming this guy isn't too big a dope this should work out. Couple of tickets to Opening Day next year and a signed ball from Mookie or something like that. If he's got dollar signs in his eyes then he's going to be sorely disappointed.

So he pulled over and crossed multiple lanes of busy traffic to retrieve it.
Sounds like a genius.

So not technically trying to do the right thing, then? Strictly speaking?

Just get another one made. How much could it cost? Let this clown have a nice souvenir.

I suspect that's the question at hand. If this guy is charging less than the printer then you make the deal with him, if he's charging more, carry on.

I'm sick of the Sox front office bad-mouthing players and banners on their way out of moving delivery trucks.
   6. PepTech, the Legendary Posted: September 19, 2018 at 02:31 PM (#5747515)
Sounds like it was never delivered, so it's on the printer, not the Sox.

The proper move is to give the Red Sox the banner freely, and let them be generous on their own. Extortion is not a good look. This guy sucks.
   7. Batman Posted: September 19, 2018 at 02:36 PM (#5747527)
The vendor could offer him 100 souvenir business cards and tickets to opening day of the printing season.

He's trying to do the right thing. He's just not succeeding.

But we're still talking like 3 figures, maybe $1,000? It's been a while but I used to have to order banners occasionally for work, and they didn't cost a lot!

I think he's a goddam lowlife thief. This was legitimate lost property, "finders keepers" is not the way a proper society operates. This belongs to the Red Sox (or the sign vendor).

stay classy, boston.

It's honestly a pretty good impression of Affleck's character in Good Will Hunting asking for a retainer. I give him 3 stars.
   13. geonose Posted: September 19, 2018 at 04:56 PM (#5747642)
Seems it's now been given to the Red Sox without compensation.

Good. I hope they don't get a thing. First he says this:
“[W]e’re trying to do the right thing, but I’m not just going to hand it to them, know what I mean?” Iacuzzi said.

Asked whether they wanted cash from the Red Sox, Iacuzzi at first said, “Yes, financial [compensation], maybe some tickets, we want something. We don’t know what we want. We want to return it, 100 percent, but we would like to get something.”
Then it turns into this:
“I want to tell you guys something: I found the flag,” Iacuzzi said. “I was never looking for money or fame or anything. I wanted to return it ever since I seen it.
If it makes guys like this happy when the Red Sox win, I'll consider rooting for the Yankees. Most of his statements were not printable in a family newspaper.

Best Boston accent on video since that dude with the baby ######' whale.

What are the chances that they got caught having stolen this.

0-2 since the botched Boston banner delivery. Maybe sacrifice a goat or something?

I mean, they literally said it "fell off a truck"...
   18. filihok Posted: September 19, 2018 at 11:14 PM (#5747902)
If someone wants to hold out on a 500th home run ball, or whatever, I have no problem with it. Get whatever you can. It's your ball fair and square.

This, obviously, is something completely different. If the dude had returned it immediately and the team had given him some tickets, then it's a nice story.

This was just some pirate [stuff]
   19. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: September 19, 2018 at 11:36 PM (#5747911)
What an odd story. The guys just sounds like a jerk.

Everyone I know would've been more then happy to just ring the FO and say hey, I think I have something of yours, where do you want me drop it?

It's like finding someone's wallet and extorting $100 from them to give their drivers licence back or something.

If the Sox don't win the series this year, you know "the banner incident" is going to be blamed. Well that or Joe Kelly.
   20. Endless Trash Posted: September 20, 2018 at 04:13 AM (#5747936)
When I first started reading, I assumed this guy was a Yankee fan and it was a bit funny. But no, seems like he is just a dick. Id I were the red sox I would ignore him and print a new banner even if he would return it for free. #### this guy.

Just checking, but is "theft by finding" a legal concept in the US in general and Massachusetts in particular?

Clearly the banner has been hanging out drinking beer and eating chicken.

Huh. As a lawyer in MA (civil, not criminal) I'm not sure about the specific legal concept, but we do have laws that cover the same area. These guys were definitely in violation of Massachusetts General Law 137 s1, which requires you to report anything worth more than three bucks to the local police, but that's not a part of the criminal code.

Wow - you guys are a buncha killjoys.

Dude shoulda been more coy and humorous -- maybe tying the banner to a chair and starting a social media campaign or that he's defending it in isolated cabin from a bunch of zombie Yankee fans and only a car ride to the park from Betts can save them both or something.... or maybe promising to return to it and then showing up with a bedsheet marked in crayon.

   26. Zonk is One Individual Posted: September 20, 2018 at 09:05 AM (#5747966)
Here's how I'd have worked it...

I'd have started various social media accounts under "Runaway Banner"... Said runaway banner would have explained that it's having a crisis of purpose, not yet ready for its adult career yet -- and that it's spending some time with friends pondering its next move. It would have then been photographed out and around town - seeing the sights, having a grand old time... and starting to wonder if its owner really cares about it anyway.

Feelers would have been posted to the Cubs from the banner's new "friends" - explaining that we think we can convince the banner to return home and grow up, but it's probably important that we remain in close contact with it - initially at least - to help it deal with this transition.
   27. Ziggy's screen name Posted: September 20, 2018 at 09:12 AM (#5747968)
That's a clown theft bro.

If he really wanted free playoff tickets, a public announcement (call the local TV station or something) that he found the Red Sox banner and would like to return it would probably have sufficed. Local TV reporter shows up at his house, he says he wants to return it but doesn't know how to contact the Red Sox. Local reporter makes its happen (live on TV). It's a story in Boston for 24 hours. I'm not PR guy, but I'd put dollars to donuts that the Red Sox would cough up some playoff tickets without any prompting in that scenario. Everybody looks good, a good chance that everybody gets what they want.

I would have kept my damn mouth shut and had a badass souvenir.

What’s the law? Maybe it becomes theirs.
   30. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2018 at 10:28 AM (#5748011)
Zonk, my suspicion is that this fellow is somewhat less clever than you are.
   31. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 20, 2018 at 11:12 AM (#5748043)

This wouldn't have worked because they didn't win the next game, but I would have bought tickets to the next game, brought it to the stadium with me, and unfurled it myself in the stands when they won.

This is like the worst straight-to-video sequel of "The Town" ever.

Also, #29 is great.

Replacement banner has been hung. Red Sox gave them nothing. Police are investigating the people who "found" the original one.
Red Sox spokeswoman Zineb Curran told the Globe that the team hung the banner early Friday morning and displayed the replacement one because they "preferred to use one that was in our possession the entire time."
