Red Sox relief prospect Durbin Feltman compared to All-Star closer by American League scout

If 21-year-old relief prospect Durbin Feltman lives up to expectations, the bullpen won’t be an area of concern much longer for the Red Sox.

Boston’s third-round pick of last June’s MLB draft has turned heads at camp this spring. In fact, one American League scout even compared Feltman to a three-time All-Star closer after watching him take the mound in a minor-league game Monday.

“He was 94 [mph] with plus downer curveball,” the AL scout said, per WEEI. “Good aggressiveness. Arm action not the same, more effort, but the fastball and curveball shape remind me of a young [Mark] Melancon.”

Of course, this would mean more if there weren’t so many relievers in the All-Star Game.

Whoever put OOTP in charge of naming babies 25 years ago has some explaining to do.

Was he named after J. D. Durbin (-0.5 bWAR) or Chad Durbin (-0.7 bWar in 836 excruciating innings!)?

Through age 25, Mark Melancon had pitched 38 major league innings with a 4.06 ERA. Age 27? 157 and 4.07.

What you want to be is the old Mark Melancon. Ages 28-33 (2013-2018): 359 innings at 2.18.

Well, as a Sox fan, this certainly doesn't thrill me. He had a 6.20 ERA in 45 innings during his lone year in Boston. But he did net us the BROCKSTAR!

Yes, the comparison to Melancon does not contain many happy memories for most Red Sox fans. His tenure in Boston was the proverbial dumpster fire.

And as I will always remind Sox fans, Boston won the Lowrie-for-Melancon trade. What they acquired in Melancon produced much more value than what they gave up in Lowrie and the other guy.

That Boston gave up on Melancon before he delivered that value means they made that transaction seem worse than it was.

I thought we were well past the days where hitting 94 as a reliever could excite anyone.
