Red Sox tickets go digital to foil scalping

Keep Adding…

The Boston Red Sox are going to a new digital ticketing system for the cheapest seats at Fenway Park to keep them out of the hands of scalpers.

Fans with seats in the $12 upper bleacher section for high-demand games will receive only digital tickets. They will be required to swipe the credit card used to purchase them at the gate.

Fenway Park is the oldest ballpark in baseball, and it is also among the most expensive. The Red Sox say they’ve left the upper bleacher seats below market price to help families get into the ballpark. But that also makes it a lucrative option for the resale market.

I drank a cool beer the other day called Digital IPA - that's all I've got

That's actually a pretty nice move, although I wonder if the franchise really gets more value from the PR niceties than they would by just selling the tickets for more in the first place.

There is a loophole, buy the ticket with a Visa-type gift card then sell that physical card along with the tickets. Wonder if their system can be savvy enough to foil that.

First, good luck to the scalper that tries to buy 100 of them and sell them off two at a time. That's 50 Visa gift cards he'd need. Second, this kills their ability to flip tickets: buy them on day of game and immediately sell them for more. Third, I wonder if the team ends up not being able to pre-sell those tickets. If I'm thinking of taking in a game in August, do I buy them now knowing if I can't use them I won't be able to re-sell them later?

Red Sox put hundreds out of work, hate America.

On a more serious note, what are you supposed to do if you buy a ticket months in advance and switch cards in the interim, or change banks, or close the credit account? I've change my debit card three times in the last three years (once changing from a student to a normal account, twice for potential fraud), and I doubt that's a particularly large number. It's not like people are buying their Sox tickets day of, many of these will be sold months in advance.

What if somebody else buys you the tickets? Hey uncle, can I have your Visa card for the day, I need to go see the Sox.

I'm sure they can come up with a system to allow people to switch the credit card for the ticket. You just require that it be done online more than 2 hours before the game or something. They can also keep a watch out for people who repeatedly sell off tickets. It's not efficient for scalpers to routinely change out credit cards, and it would definitely stop the scalping outside the stadium.

But think of the nostalgia hoarders who enjoy hanging on to the stubs.

I don't hang on to as many material things as I used to, but I still save my ticket stubs. For me, it's enjoyable to come across one of them later on, since I end up recalling details of that game and day.

I can't really do that with a credit card, since thoughts of my shitty credit rating would overpower any memories of getting drunk in the sun and watching Johnathon Broxton almost blow a four-run lead on Father's Day.

There are flaws but I'm glad they're doing something. It pisses me off that everytime I go to a game I see the same people scalping tickets in the same place and no one does a damned thing. In the meantime God forbid if I sell my tickets for above face I lose my season tickets.

I'm probably a wimp and the likelihood of actually having my tickets stripped is low unless I sell them for an ungodly amount that gets attention or something but still, it's annoying. If it's against the law enforce it, if it's not going to be enforced, let's get rid of it.

This is only for the ultra cheap tix, yes? Well, you get a product at a substantial discount in other industries and you have restrictions or inconveniences also. That's the price you pay, so to speak, for getting them cheap. If you must have a ticket stub, buy a higher priced paper ticket.

I never buy time stamped apparel ('20XX Division Champs' t-shirts') and frankly own very little sports apparel beyond t shirts for around the house/yard, but I do love my ticket stubs. Almost as much as my old scorecard books.

I really hate it when I end up with tickets off a printer. This would be even worse. I'm sure we're moving in this direction, mostly because tickets are expensive to print.

If it's like the .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) (part of the Kroenke sports empire; looks like it's used by several of his teams as well as by the Cavs, Rockets and Jazz and likely concerts in those stadiums as well), you register a credit card to the account. They scan it at the gate. If something had happened to your card between the purchase and game date, you register a different one. You can use your drivers license as a backup.

In that system they allow you to transfer the ticket simply by sending it to any other account, and you can offer the tickets for sale as well. I suppose scalpers can do that, too, so maybe the system the Red Sox will use won't have this feature.
