Red Sox worried about leaks

In the aftermath of this week’s Yahoo! Sports story of a reported mutiny by Red Sox players against manager Bobby Valentine, there were strong denials from players and owner John Henry Wednesday, and emerging as a major issue for upper Sox management is concern over the sources cited in the story and their motivation.

“We are very concerned about a breach of confidence in this matter because in the 10 years we’ve held these meetings, we’ve never had information leak like this,” said Larry Lucchino, the team’s president and CEO.

“Leaky Larry” is now concerned about organization breaches of confidence?  I haven’t laughed this hard since Carlin was walking the stage.

Wilfred Brimley in Absence of Malice:

"You had a leak? You call what's goin' on around here a leak? Boy, the last time there was a leak like this, Noah built hisself a boat."

Just give up the pretense of secrecy; make it all a reality show on NESN and cash in.

I'm reminded of the Elston Howard rant against not leaking anything to the media in Ball Four.

From TFA:
Before Tuesday’s game, in fact, Valentine came over to Pedroia in the dugout, put his hand around his neck, and kissed him.

“It’s an Italian thing,” Valentine said.

In Old Primer, I'd have posted this as Joe Valachi.

Yeah, when you buy the wrong brand of diaper for your whiny little babies, that'll happen.

Serious question: I thought John Henry said the leaks weren't true. Which would mean that nothing actually leaked. So what is the issue, here?

Is it that _some_ of the "leaked" details were true?

Polygraph examinations might be in order. Should do wonders for morale.

Why don't they just close up that barn door nice and tight now that the horse is gone.

So, Pedroia is going to need the clubhouse guy to start his car for him after the games now.

Probably. The basic leaked stuff seems true (there was a text message, a meeting was held) but maybe Henry thinks that some of the specifics weren't exactly right or they were mischaracterized.

Who released the story about being concerned about leaks??? It's so meta!

I nominate Matsuzaka

Well, let's see, the rule behind leaks is that you want the information out but don't want to be seen as giving it out because someone above you doesn't want that information out. Ergo, I see no reason to believe that any of it is false at this time.

I wonder if Nicholas Branch is available.

If what was leaked isn't true, someone is using their position to disseminate lies. The issue is:

1) You can't truly counter the lies without leaking the truth. But even then, outsiders won't be able to tell the difference between lies and truth, nor between the counterclaims and "spin". So "leaked" lies are fairly damaging.

2) Why would someone want to leak lies? (a) If they're throwing the media off the investigative trail. But that doesn't really make much sense here. (b) If they're trying to advance an agenda. If someone is trying to make it appear there's more support for their agenda than there is, it will build more pressure for that agenda in the public. (c) Fun! Well, if negative manipulation of the team's image is an employee's idea of fun, that's a pretty big problem.

Pedroia doesn't seem patient enough to stand by and watch Matsuzaka nibble around the ignition with the key.

I thought it was that someone above you wanted the information out, but didn't want their name attached to it.

"Sure, I don't mind if my staff members rape little boys, as long as they win me games", said an unidentified senior member of the Penn State football program.

(Ok, maybe I'm done with Penn State analogies for the time being)

Or is this just a government thing?
   22. Mayor Blomberg Posted: August 16, 2012 at 06:52 PM (#4209989)
Different kind of leak smileyy. Sometimes called the trial balloon -- float it out there and see what the reaction is before owning it. Those are really not leaks at all, but manipulation of a press too willing to do the job as long as there's good food in the press room and someone picks up their bar tabs.

Walt - Crawford could do it for a max of 4 days without a day off.
