Reds-Cards rained out, will play back-to-back doubleheaders

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds are going to get plenty of work over the next two days.

The Reds and NL Central-leading Cardinals were rained out Friday night, setting up back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend. The teams will play day-night doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.

A rainout in St. Louis in early June forced a makeup as part of Saturday’s twinbill.

The Cardinals lead the Chicago Cubs by one game in the division.

For those of us who’ve been missing the doubleheader….

When was the last time teams played back-to-back doubleheaders?

What I can find, says it's the Marlins at Mets in 2018, September 12th/13th... ESPN list of doubleheaders

by that list above, Detroit at White Sox happened in 2017,

I guess this is not as unusual as I thought...

and I was wrong... those weren't back to back doubleheaders played, by either the Mets/Marlins or White Sox/Detroit... I didn't look at the results, and the first double header had a game postponed and so it was played on the next day.

as far as I can tell, the next previous time it happened was in 2006 with the Braves and Phillies in September, and Bos/Yanks also.

And poor Atlanta in 2006... between September 2nd and September 13th, they had 4 double headers(three against Philly, one against the Mets) thank goodness for expanded rosters in September. (they wen 2 and 6 in those contests)

Yogi Berra caught both games of a doubleheader 117 times. Without even seeing the line-ups, I’m venturing a guess that no catcher does that either day.

Sadly Molina isn’t getting the call for all four games. He’s hitting up a storm - kinda surprised

I take it back. Yadi gets a couple in innings in game 2 and scores go ahead run. Let’s see if Shildt plays him two tomorrow
