Reggie Jackson: Yankees need Steinbrenner presence in N.Y.

“Hank needs to have a presence here,” says Jackson, an adviser to principal owner George Steinbrenner. “There is a void. ... Hank’s presence and size make him imposing, and it comes through he’s not to be messed with.”

George Steinbrenner, 78, has not attended games this year because of ailing health. But he is scheduled to be at the All-Star Game on Tuesday, said his oldest son, Hank, 51, along with younger brother and co-chairman Hal and their two sisters.

“Hank and Hal together make a great team,” Jackson says. “I love Hal’s consistency, accountability and organization and I like ‘Mount’ Hank’s unpredictability. You never know what Hank may say, and that was the way of The Boss. Looking back, we liked it and miss it. It kept us all on edge.”

Hank, edgier than Rev. Hank “Straight Edge” Peirce? Somehow I doubt it.

What the Yankees need is consistent offensive production. They don't need to score 9 runs, they just need to score 5.

Getting Matsui back on Friday (possibly) will likely help that, but it won't be enough unless Jeter, Abreu and Cano pick up their offensive production and Posada starts catching regularly again.

It's possible, and if they do start hitting they've got a decent shot at making the playoffs. But it's far from a sure thing.

Funny, reading The Bronx Zoo, I never got the impression that the other players much cared for never knowing what George Steinbrenner might say.

Reggie's looking back with rose colored glasses, maybe the ones for hitting curveballs that Frank Robinson told him he should get.

I don't mean to dishonor George at this stage of his life, but what the Yankees need far, far more than a similar presence is a plan and smart decision-making to effectuate that plan.

I think Reggie is merely trying to curry favor with Hank.

Actually, what they need is the plan they're implementing now to be implemented back in 2001 or so.

They have a plan, they just implemented it too late to prevent the team from getting old. So, they're gonna "suffer" for a little bit (if you count 85 wins as "suffering").

I think the most compelling thing about this All-Star game will be whether George's drooling ass will be shown on camera.

My only reservation is that Hank doesn't seem the patient type and I feel he's going to lose it at some point and buy up a bunch of useless free agents.

I'm hopeful they'll make the right moves. There's a lot of money coming off the books and two young elite free agents that would fill two of the team's biggest holes.

They'll still have to address RF, though, and I guess decide if they're confident enough in Jackson to wait for him in CF.

Meet Hal Steinbrenner. He has exactly as much power as Hank Steinbrenner, thinks much the same way as Cashman, and has told Hank to shut the hell up several times.

I'm not worried about Hank. A NYC team needs some bluster coming out of the front office, anyway.
