Some brouhaha brewing over the extent and nature of Ryan Zimmerman's injury/injuries. Jon Heyman says it's a calf injury that has kept Zim on the 60-day DL, local beat reporters report the team and "sources" say "nahhhh". Twitter is a-twitter over this right now.
   5. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: July 12, 2018 at 03:42 PM (#5709172)
Jon Heyman at fancredsports.com

— Ryan Zimmerman appears ready to start a rehab assignment soon for his calf and oblique injuries. And according to an N.L. executive, there was a calf injury in spring, and also a recurrence recently (though, the Nats continue to call it only an oblique). While it was written that the Nats weren’t using Zimmerman in games this spring as a grand experiment to preserve older veterans, and at the least the Nats never corrected the record, the reality is that Zimmerman missed almost all spring training with a calf injury. He got at-bats on the back field in simulated games, but in those at-bats, he just got at-bats and didn’t run to first base, or certainly run the bases. It’s a little unusual this went undetected as some other teams began to wonder whether the Nats’ grand experiment – which wasn’t really an experiment at all – might be worth trying for their own players.
— Once the season started, Zimmerman was ready to play, but soon went down with an oblique injury. He’s been out two months, but it hasn’t all been the oblique injury. It turns out that when he tried to ramp things up at one point, the calf acted up again – yes, the calf injury no one seemed to know about …

Nationals lead 2-0 after a half-inning with Scherzer getting ready to face the Mets.

Nats' win probability has been pegged at 107 percent.

Well it ain't looking good. Price K's the side in between giving up 2 hits a homer and 2 runs in the first.

Price only give up 1 hit in the seconds, holds Jays to 0 runs, still down 2-0.

Black hole section of Red Sox lineup due up

So Pearce is out after getting beaned. Swihart at 1B now. Can't use Moreland as Jays hurler uses his left hand. Red Sox line up now goes a whole 4 deep!
   18. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 12, 2018 at 07:55 PM (#5709297)
Price gives up another hit in inning 3, he is determined to keep that WHIP as much above 1 as possible just to make it interesting.

Severino a bit off tonight. Maybe the innings are catching up with him - he's on pace to top last season's career high by about 30 innings. Could give him some extra rest by not starting him in the first couple of games after the break.

Three of his foul balls left the stadium before the granny onto the parking garage. He was destined to hit that dinner. If Mike Trout didn't exist or he played in the NL he'd have an MVP award and be on his way to a second.

Gotta feel sorry for Francona. Go-ahead run on base in the 8th of a tie game, and he's got to choose between the worst bullpen in baseball and his starter who's already thrown 113 pitches.

Sure glad he chose to stick with Kluber, because that 114th pitch might have cost the Indians the game. GREAT at bat by Hicks.

If you've wanted a Daisuke Matsuzaka update, he'll be starting the 2018 NPB All Star Game for the Central League. So far this season, he is 3-3, 2.41 ERA in 7 starts. He has 35 strikeouts in 37.1 IP and walked 22.

It's only got symbolic meaning, but the Yanks are now 21-8 against the best 6 teams they've played.

vs. Boston 5 - 4
vs. Houston 5 - 2
vs. Cleveland 4 - 0
vs. Seattle 3 - 0
vs. Philadelphia 2 -1
vs. Atlanta 2 - 1

Now if they could only beat the Orioles and the Rangers, and get someone else to beat the Red Sox.....

I mean, they're scoring it a triple even though it was pretty much a single that skipped past Nimmo as it bounced off the concrete lip behind the padding down the RF wall. Then he scored on the rare Difo XBH.

   64. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 08:31 PM (#5709718)
Pujols having a good July(.297/.366/.676/1.042, 4 homeruns, 2 doubles, 8 rbi in 10 games) , so of course he goes on the DL, but pretty good timing as the all star break reduces the number of games he's actually going to miss.

Has raised his ops+ to 99, which is of course not good for a 1b/dh, but is at least not horrible. (he has been a + 2 rfield firstbaseman this year)
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5709719)
Cardinal announcers have already been making a big deal out of the fact that Rigglemann hasn't been named the permanent manager yet, and is still called interim... and I'm thinking, isn't pretty much every interim manager called interim until at least late August regardless of when he took over? (unless it was one of those weird situations where they hired a guy specifically to take over for the role, but a quick firing in the first month or so of the season, and promoting of an existing coach doesn't really seem to be that type of case)

Watching Bryce Harper stroll to first as he grounds into DP. He wants how much money next year? Sure.
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 09:02 PM (#5709726)
was it a routine double play? If so, the who the f cares other than old farts who are jealous of young studs.
   68. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: July 13, 2018 at 09:03 PM (#5709727)
The second baseman (A.Cabrera?) could've had lunch before throwing to 1B and still gotten Harper.
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 09:07 PM (#5709729)
That was a nice play for the most part.

Carlos Martinez hits a ball to the second baseman that the first baseman dived for and couldn't get, the second baseman does a nice spin throw to the covering pitcher and probably still wouldn't have gotten him anyway, but the pitcher completely missed the ball, and the throw is not a toss, but a hard throw and it's going to the backstop, the catcher who was running to back up the throw, then has to change directions and makes a sliding catch on the ball to prevent it from going all the way to the backstop...

So kudos to Gennett and Barnhart and even Carlos Martinez for hustling, knocks against Votto, Gennett for making bad decisions.... still a fun play to watch if you are a fan of the game.

If he was running hard, would that have made a difference on 97% of the plays?
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 09:11 PM (#5709731)
omg, we are going to get an in game interview with some scrub basketball player from St Louis who has made it to the NBA.... It's bad enough listening to the charities interviews, which are just a freaking waste of time(they could accomplish a ton more by just running a ticker on the screen for the entire game, than dealing with interviewing people for charities... but that is still better than interviews of "stars" from the local area.)
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 09:12 PM (#5709732)
Jayson Tatum (or whoever he is) is a full on jinx, first pitch during his interview is a homerun by Scotter Gennett.

On THIS play, it might have.

Regardless, it's not a good look for a guy hoping for his big payday who has lost his keen eye at the plate and also just misplayed a fly ball out into an Automatic Double. I'll concede that he's not a centerfielder. I'm still not thrilled about watching him put out appearances of having given up on the season tonight. You can take the nuts-and-bolts view, but appearances still count to some fans.

   75. cardsfanboy Posted: July 13, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5709736)
I get that it's not a good look, but ultimately 95+% of the plays, the results are known the second that ball hits the bat, and just looking like you are caring by going all out, really doesn't make a difference in the real world. Getting upset by that type of thing, almost always seems to focus on the star players and not the mediocre players. It's to the point that I automatically assume the outrage has more to do with the reputation of the quality of the player, than it does any real examination of his actions.

Joe Kelly just crossed up Sandy Leon so badly that the ball his Leon in the catching arm, dropped down, and the runner advanced from second to third.

The thing is, the ball was DEAD CENTER of the strike zone.

But because Leon looked like he was doing a jig trying to get his body/glove in front of the pitch and was moving every which way, the umpire was completely confused.

The Jays telecast showed the location as the center square of the grid.

Here is a picture.

I still think Kole Calhoun's done as a major league regular, but he's certainly shown some life since coming back. Long homer to dead center ties the game against the Dodgers at 1-1.
Second solo homer for Calhoun tonight. I may have to take back that thing about him being done....

Chase Utley is retiring at the end of this season.

the weird part of the event was that he seemed to believe he had a choice.
he turns 40 in December, and he is not even replacement level at 2B at 77 OPS+.

Mr. Snotrocket surrenders a single and 2 walks in the 7th to load the bases for Reyes Moronta. 2-1 Giants.

Rizzo definitely was looking better in his at-bats tonight.

I think heyward would have scored even with out the misplay on the ball. But man what a shitty way to blow the save for the padres.
