A person with knowledge of the situation said the Arizona Diamondbacks and catcher Miguel Montero have agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract on Friday….
The 28-year-old Venezuelan is a clubhouse leader and outstanding defensive catcher. He has thrown out 47.6% of the runners trying to steal (28 of 60), best in the National League. He led the league in that category in 2011 at 47.7%, a franchise record.
The left-handed batter is hitting .252 with two home runs and 21 RBI in 38 games for the struggling Diamondbacks. He was out of the lineup for the third straight game Friday night because of a groin strain sustained while chasing a foul ball to the screen against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night.

1. Jim (jimmuscomp) Posted: May 27, 2012 at 12:51 PM (#4141194)I'm an AL guy, so I'm not hip to Montero, but really?
But mostly I blame Towers.
I linked this yesterday...(last night my time). It's not on Hot topics because nobody was interested to talk about it.
If you click on the link at the top of the submission that says Diamondbacks, it brings you to the Newsbeat home page that includes articles for all teams.
If you used the drop down files to select Diamondbacks news, all that comes up is this submission.
Weird.
Yeah, this is an overpay and poor bet by the D Backs. That said, I think he's probably somewhat better than some of the posters in this thread are giving him credit for. Since 2009 in 1511 PA's he has a 111 OPS+. He has pop....he's a much better hitter than his numbers so far this year. He's become very good defensively, ranking high in pitch framing, caught stealing the last two years, and he handles a staff pretty well.
3/30 would have been much more appropriate, but he wouldn't sign for that. The team offered him 4/32 and he turned that down. I think they felt like they would lose him and had no other options.
I would have let him walk. But Montero is a good catcher and a great guy. If nothing else, I'm happy for him personally.
