Report: Giants to get Orlando Cabrera from Indians

2011 World Series MVP?

The Indians are definitely doing more adding than subtracting at the moment, but they’ve decided Orlando Cabrera is expendable and they’re about to trade him to the Giants for outfielder Thomas Neal.

Cabrera had hit just .244/.277/.321 while serving as the Indians’ primary second baseman for most of the first four months… The Giants will likely shift Cabrera back to his natural position of shortstop.  He probably won’t be an everyday guy, but he should be able to help out, particularly against lefties in a job share with Mike Fontenot.  One wonders if Miguel Tejada will be released to make room for him.

Classic @keithlaw tweet last night:

"The Giants, tired of playing a statue (Tejada) or an automatic out (Crawford) at short, acquire Orlando Cabrera, who is both"

The tweet I saw that best summarized this from the Tribe's POV was from @LetsGoTribe:

"Can't believe @IndiansGM got a guy who will likely appear in majors for Orlando Cabrera. That's shocking story of night for me."

Sabean appears to be working his way through mid-oughts Boston shortstops... can a Garciaparra comeback be far behind?

Cabrera joins his 9th major-league team.

Certainly looks like a nice low risk deal for the Tribe. Always liked Neal as a player, his power outage this year is a little troubling but otherwise it looks like he could be a capable 4th outfielder with maybe a little upside. Cabrera OTOH looks awfully toasty at this point.

So if the Giants make the playoffs, that will be four straight playoff appearances for four different teams for Orlando. That has to be some kind of record, right?
