Report: Jose Iglesias could miss most of the 2014 season

Chvrches: The broken bones of what you believe.

Earlier, D.J. Short wondered if the Tigers would make a play for free agent Stephen Drew after it was reported that shortstop Jose Iglesias would begin the season on the disabled list with shin splints. It may be worse than the Tigers expected. ESPN’s Jim Bowden is reporting that Iglesias could miss most of the 2014 season. As a result, they indeed will be expected to pursue Drew.

I've never heard of a case of shin splints resulting in someone missing multiple months of time.

Darwin Barney is available, I hope.

Same with me, Rough.

And the needle for the Peavy/Iglesias trade swings a little over towards "Ben". Although it was a 3-teamer.

You could argue this is a good thing for the Tigers. If they do draw Drew.

Damian Easley struggled with shin splints while an Angel. They kept him out a lot.

Perhaps they're downplaying some sort of stress fracture? Maybe hoping any trading partner or free agent won't sense their desperation?

From everyone I've ever known who was diagnosed with them, shin splints are a ############.

Months doesn't surprise me at all, if that is what it is.

I had shin splints once (undiagnosed but I'm pretty sure that's what they were) and while they hurt they didn't keep me from doing anything, Icy Hot handled the worst of it when I wanted to pound on my legs. They may have been relatively minor though, they went away after a few weeks despite me doing nothing to go easy on my legs.
   11. Rough Carrigan Posted: March 15, 2014 at 09:39 PM (#4672236)
That's just it. Shin splints are a sort of wait and see sort of thing. I've had it several times. It seems very weird to diagnose shin splints and know in advance that it'll keep someone out of action several months. That's something you might know if it's really a stress fracture.
   12. Tim D Posted: March 15, 2014 at 09:47 PM (#4672238)
Internal options are Hernan Perez or Danny Worth. Both competent with the glove, both will hit like Iglesias without providing the special defense. So they make a deal with AZ for either Owings or Gregorius, or they bite the bullet and sign Drew, losing the 23rd pick in the draft. Curious that Boras reps both Drew and Iglesias. Anyway, Drew hits RHP well and would be a good fit. Hate losing the pick but if this team is going to win a WS they need to do it in 2014 or 2015. Bite the bullet.

That's what I thought too. Shin splints shouldn't even keep him out of the lineup today, never mind all year.

I used to get shin splints all the time back when II was in the Army. I think this was mainly because I didn't stretch properly before running.

Don't forget that if the Tigers sign Drew, it is the Red Sox who will be the beneficiary of the Tigers' draft pick. This trade is indeed getting better for Boston all the time!

Are we sure that Boras isn't ordering Mafia hits on the body parts of Tigers players?

Why would the Tigers pretend it's shin splints yet admit he's out for the year? Even a stress fracture wouldn't typically keep him out more than 3 months tops. To miss the whole season he has to have torn up his knee or his ankle or just straight out broken his leg. Or else have some kind of bad degenerative condition or something, but let's hope not.

#3) yeah, i always thought the white sox got the best part of it with avisail garcia. small sample sizes and all that, but he was pretty solid in 168 at bats for the white sox last year (106 OPS+, but hey he's 23 and hopefully trending upward as he has his first proper go-around in the bigs, as he's basically a replacement player @ the ML level right now). he could end up being the new (and improved) dayan viciedo, who had an injury ravaged season that stymied him on his quest to become said replacement player * dramatic interlude *
   20. cercopithecus aethiops Posted: March 16, 2014 at 09:12 AM (#4672299)
Apparently, Igleias has been struggling with shin problems for years. He's been wearing orthotics "since at last year." They've tried making adjustments to those, but he still can't run without pain. The condition is now being described as "tibial stress reactions" whatever that means. Maybe multiple stress fractures?

Still, the only primary source for missing "most of the season" seems to be Bowden's tweet.

That sounds career-threatening, and that sucks. Baseball needs more defensive wizards, not fewer. I'm legitimately sad about this.
   22. ptodd Posted: March 16, 2014 at 09:48 PM (#4672579)
A grade 4b MTSS can keep you out more than 10 weeks, and then you have to get back in playing shape. I can see him out till after the break if that's what he has

http://radiopaedia.org/cases/fredericson-mri-classification-of-medial-tibial-stress-syndrome

If it got this bad the Tigers medical team really dropped the ball here. I have to imagine it was disclosed by the Red Sox and Iglesias himself. Managing pain is not the solution here, and it kind of seems like that's what they were focusing by sending him to an orthopedic whose expertise is pain management

Shin splints is a catch all for a variety of medial tibia issues which can come in various degrees of severity. Just like strain or sprain is used when it can be a partial tear of a muscle or ligament or worse

Well, Iglesias is one of his clients, although not a free agent for a long while

This does seem kind of strange. I could understand shin splints keeping you from running or sports like basketball or soccer where you're constantly in motion. But for them to keep a baseball player--even a shortstop--sidelined for months just seems unlikely to me.

In both legs? Yikes. What kind of workouts was he doing during the offseason/Spring Training?

GM Dave Dombrowski says the Tigers will not pursue free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, the Detroit News' Lynn Henning reports. Dombrowski says the Tigers will go with "internal candidates" to replace the injured Jose Iglesias at shortstop, perhaps including Danny Worth, Eugenio Suarez or Hernan Perez.

Henning takes that to mean that the Tigers might still have interest in pursuing trades as a way of finding a new shortstop, but they will not pursue Drew. The Tigers have the No. 23 pick in the upcoming draft, and Henning suggests they do not want to give that up in order to sign Drew. They also do not want to sign Drew to a long-term deal when Iglesias still figures to be their long-term answer at shortstop.

It emerged this weekend that Iglesias' shin injury would cause him to miss most of the 2014 season. That news has led to increased speculation that the Tigers would sign Drew, who previously had not been able to find much of a market after rejecting a qualifying offer from the Red Sox.

Ugh. Wanted that 23rd pick.
   33. SG Posted: March 17, 2014 at 03:29 PM (#4672975)
Not the way it works. The 23rd pick would have vanished. You get a supplemental pick.

Jeebus, at this point I wonder if the Sox could offer Drew $4 mill in pity money and sign him as the backup for 3rd and SS. Do the Sox have any 3rd base insurance?

And with the Tigers' pick vanishing, all the Red Sox picks move one slot earlier.

I can't imagine Drew signing for $4 or $8 million.

I would imagine Drew will get a slew of $13-15 million one-year offers in June, right? Whether he'll get a multi-year offer depends on how bad those medical reports are, I would guess.

$13-15 million offers in June are pro-rated, correct?
