This announcement appeared in the N&O this morning, but I can’t find an on-line link at the moment. Best of luck to Keith in his future endeavors.

And the best mole I've had was outside Tijuana.

The best mole you can have outside of Oaxaca is at Chilpancingo or Ixcapuzalco in Chicago. All the dishes pay homage to the chef's grandmothers.

Maybe I should ask UCCF if they have Long John Silvers or Red Lobster up in Maine.

There's no Red Lobster or Long John Silvers anywhere in Maine.

The closest Red Lobsters are in upstate NY (according to their website). Looks like the closest LJS's are in the Boston area.

On the topic of Mexican food, it's nonexistent in Bangor. We've got a Taco Bell and a local place that I went to once. It was easily the worst Mexican food I've ever had, and possibly the worst food I've ever had. The tortilla chips had a plastic quality, undercooked and stuck together. Chewy would be a good description. The entree was bland and flavorless.

A decent chain like Panchero's would clean up here.

Central Mass is not much better. Most of the places that I have been too are pretty bad. I found one that was tolerable.

We stopped at a place last weekend that was near the Conn. border. I was originally thinking "this is all right" and then I realized how much my expectations have been lowered.

However, the Italian and Vietnamese places are much much better.

"If you mention UT, he has no comeback. Because it's incontrovertible."

No come on. Im sure i can think of another place with the initials UT thats better....it doesn't that much to be above UT-knoxville

I honestly don't know. Some of my students recommend some place, but I think its out by Medford. I haven't been there or found a good spot yet.

It will be soon -- the language is what we make it.

Irregardless to whether it makes sense or not.

I despise Panchero's.

What do you hate about Panchero's? As chain Mexican goes, it's a step above the usual suspects (at least IMHO).

It's far from the authentic stuff, but that's asking a lot up this way.

If you want to know what's wrong with England is that there are no Mexican places (excepting London).

Even a Taco Bell would make a billion dollars in Manchester.

It could be a lot better. And I think it's existence might help keep Chipotle or one of the better versions out.

What is an SF style burrito?

Casa Romero has good upscale Mexican.

I quite like El Pelon Taqueria in the Fenway area - cheap, and they've got this great burrito with plantains called "The El Guapo".

I've heard tell of very good Mexican food hidden away in the suburbs, but I've never checked up on it to find names or anything.

If you're in the Boston area, you might try looking on the website for the Phantom Gourmet. They carry that show up here in Maine, and once a week they spend an hour reviewing restaurants - and usually not upscale stuff, but cheap eateries. I catch it once in a while, and it always makes me wish I lived closer to Boston so I could try some of these places.

I'd be shocked if they haven't done a Mexican food show at some point.

Thanks for the advice. I am not currently in Boston, but am considering the idea of relocation. And one thing I would definitely miss from Atlanta would be Mexican food. With all the Hispanic immigrants here, not only do we have Mexican (real and Tex-Mex), we have Peruvian, Puerto Rican, Honduran, and more.
   318. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 04, 2006 at 03:36 PM (#2050518)
Boston's got more than Mexican food, too. There's an amazing Venezuelan place in the South End called Orinoco, there's a really good Peruvian in Somerville (IIRC), great Chilean sandwiches in Downtown Crossing at Charcutero, Cape Verdean stews in Dorchester (Cape Verde being sorta half-African half-Latin cuisine). It's probably not as extensive as you'll get in Atlanta, but theres depth and breadth, I think.

What Boston does really well in the food department tends more toward Italian and seafood restaurants, but it's not all that's here.

You like Pho BL?

Frak I love Pho. six dollars for a bowl of yummy beefiness and noodle.
   320. bunyon Posted: June 04, 2006 at 04:18 PM (#2050532)
So. We've ruled out Keith taking the ESPN job for better Mexican?

And the best mole I've had was outside Tijuana.

OT I know, but speaking of "Mole", everytime I flip on CNN, it's got Anderson Frakking Cooper on it... arrrgghhh.

Maybe they can feed him to Helen Thomas or something.

The best Mexican food I ever had was in Kumamoto, JApan. The place used the fresh seafood available in the area to make these variety plates of super-light, diversly flavorful tostadas.

Everytiem I have Mexican in Taipei I have a hissy fit over how bad it is.

Mexican is nto the worst food offense though. Everytime I have a bagel I want to stab somebody in the eye with a burning menorah. The bagels here dishonour the Jewish people, they are THAT bad.

Tu Y Yo in Somerville right (next to Tufts) is great. No chips & salsa, no burritos. Just authentic food and some swell sangria. Mmm sangria...

Plus, he [Keith Law] welched on a bet he made with me about the Orioles' attendance going up in 2002, and he still owes me a copy of the latest BP annual, the rat....

Since I was the one who wrote the above words, I should also mention what has since ensued. Almost immediately, I got an e-mail from Keith expressing his apology if he’d forgotten about the bet, but that he was more than willing to make good on it. And since the latest BP Annual is already many months old, he offered to substitute a copy of Baseball Between The Numbers. Which just arrived today from Amazon.

So needless to say, I now see Keith Law in a new light, and since my original accusation was made in public, it’s only right that the followup should be posted as well. Thanks to Keith for proving himself a gentleman; not everyone would have done what he did, especially considering the tone of my original words.

I thought you *won* the bet?

Correct. Although Mexican is the one cuisine I found lacking in Toronto's food scene.

Good Mexican in my area of Boston...

Olé in Inman Square
Zócalo in Cambridge (formerly Olé, I don't think it's as good since the name/owner change, but their guacamole is tops around here)
Ixtapa in Lexington (great for takeout too - they give you a big bag of chips and plenty of their homemade salsa)

I've only been to the Forest Cafe in Cambridge for drinks & trivia, but lots of folks swear by their food. I'll vote Dali in Inman for sangria, but the food is Spanish, not Mexican.

Never been to Tu Y Yo; looked to me like foodie Mexican food, which isn't my style. Besides, if I hoof it to Davis Square, I'm going to Redbones.
