Report: Sweeney will make team over Garko

Mike Sweeney’s hot spring bat has won him a roster spot on the Mariners, according to national baseball writer Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports.

Sweeney, who is hitting .517 this spring, was a long-shot to make the roster after agreeing to a minor-league contract just before camp. But for the second straight year, apparently the Mariners saw what they wanted in terms of offense and clubhouse leadership.

Garko, 29, does have minor-league options, but Morosi is reporting that he will be waived instead of sent to Tacoma. He signed a one-year deal with the Mariners in February for $550,000, with the potential for another $500,000 in incentives based on plate appearances.

The Mariners wouldn’t confirm that Garko has been waived, but it is team policy to not comment on any such moves until a player has cleared the waiver process.

Thanks to Herb.

Wow, I thought Mike Sweeney retired like 3 years ago.

I thought this was about Mark Sweeney and the Giants...

This is a shame. Not because Garko is some great player but because the Mariners need as much offense as possible yet they appear to be content with the same unacceptable DH platoon that carried them to an AL-worst offense last year.

Dumb. This is going to come back and bite them.

I get keeping Sweeney around based on his spring performance, but given the likelihood that Sweeney turns back into a pumpkin within the next few weeks, I don't get just kicking Garko to the curb.

Ditto. I assumed another Mike Sweeney had slipped into the league without me noticing.

Seattle has weird roster construction. Neither Griffey nor Sweeney has a position. Bradley's best position is DH. Their 4th outfielder can only really play LF and their reserve IF doesn't really play SS.

Pitching and defense!

I'm pretty confident at least one of those players get hurt the first week, and all three will be on the DL by the end of the month.

Then who will play DH?

Jermaine Dye would listen if the Mariners called in May.

Free Garko.

But then their 5th OF is a very good corner OF, and their RF is a pretty good CF. And really, if anything happened to one of their starters, they would be replaced by Saunders, who played a pretty good LF last year.

And this says nothing of Mike Carp, who should be their DH by June.

They might as well sign Dye as their backup SS, he has about as much experience at the position as Hannahan.

Garko is another player the Angels could use, especially if they are otherwise considering giving Robb Quinlan a roster spot. Earlier today I mentioned Brandon Moss. Great time to pick off players that other teams don't have room for.

I thought Sweeney couldn't play 1B anymore. OK, he's played 24 games there the last 3 years. So Kotchman is the full-time 1B? Griffey/Sweeney are the full-time DH platoon? Bradley doesn't get days off at DH?

Hendry-esque!!
