Reports: Jays to call up Biggio on Friday

The Toronto Blue Jays will call up second base prospect Cavan Biggio, son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, for the first time on Friday, multiple media outlets reported Thursday night.

Cavan Biggio, 24, is hitting .306 with six homers and 26 RBIs in 41 games with Triple-A Buffalo this season, easily his best campaign in three-plus years in the minor leagues since being drafted by Toronto in the fifth round in 2016.

His brothers, Wicklow, Kildare, Mayo, and Clare, were all unavailable for comment.

Two rookie sons of HoFers on the same team at the same time-ever happened before?
   2. Davo Posted: May 24, 2019 at 10:00 AM (#5845289)
1. Nope—it’s a first! Though the 1997 Reds had Eduardo Perez and Pete Rose Jr.

I think this is also the first time there have been three sons of Hall of Famers active in MLB at the same time.

Is that what he was named for?

Call up Bo Bichette! Heck, call up Kacy Clemens!

And Griffin Conine!

Sadly, they traded Dwight Smith Jr to the Orioles.

I think this is also the first time there have been three sons of Hall of Famers active in MLB at the same time.

Dave Sisler, Earl Averill Jr and Charlie Lindstrom were all active in 1958. Though Averill & Lindstrom's dads were not HOF-ers yet, and it doesn't look like Averill & Lindstrom's 1958 call-ups coincided (Averill was July/Aug and Lindstrom was late-September).

I know I'm being dumb, but...who is the other one?

People always say that they know they've gotten old when most the players are younger than them...well, seeing the sons of players I grew up watching has the same effect on me.

8- Vlad Guerrero Jr. was just called up by the Jays a couple weeks ago.

The third HOFer’s son who’s active in MLB right now is Ivan Rodriguez’s son Dereck, a starting pitcher for the Giants.

Dwight Smith Jr. is probably also sad about that.

Trey Griffey is on the Steelers roster. I guess he hasn't gotten into an NFL game yet.

Oh wow, I had no idea.

I have not only seen the sons of players I grew up watching, but I have seen those sons retire and become managers.

Not for long, he ain't - he's more or less a camp body.

Doubt it. He might be playing for a bad team but at least gets a chance to play. He’s played well to start the year. The pay certainly beats what a 5th year in Buffalo would have paid him.

Sadly, they traded Dwight Smith Jr to the Orioles.

Not so sad if you've seen him play.

Smith has been roughly the O’s second best hitter (among regulars) and second best position player by WAR (behind Alberto, the guy getting trashed the other day in a different thread for a mental error on defense).
He was a solid pickup.

Not a Jay and also a grandson versus a junior but: the Giants just called up minor league journeyman Mike Yastrzemski, who will be making his big league debut.

He got sent back down to AAA a couple weeks ago.

12 could've substituted the Bells for the Boones. Buddy's a former manager, David now manages the Reds.

If you really want to feel old, the Giants just called up Mike Yastrzemski, Yaz’s grandson, to the MLB club.

I have Ray Boone and Gus Bell baseball cards. All their grandsons are long retired. Yeesh.

[Pudge's son] got sent back down to AAA a couple weeks ago.

Dereck started 19 games for the Giants last season. In 118 IP he put up 137 ERA+ and 1.132 WHIP. Not too shlabby.

It would've been super cool if he had come up in time for Pudge to be his catcher one time. Of course, a million things would've had to line up for that to happen.

Dereck is back and pitched two perfect innings in relief today.

Mike Yastrzemski stated in LF and went 0 for 3 today with 2 K, because that's what you do when you play LF for the 2019 Giants.

who has started for them there so far this year? * for those who have been jettisoned:

Gerardo Parra*, Mac Williamson*, Yangervis Solarte*, Tyler Austin, Connor Joe*, Mike Gerber*, Steven Vogt, Mike Yastrzemski. (Michael Reed* appeared in 2 G in LF but did not start a game there).

Biggio got the first three hits of his major league career today, the second of which was also his first homerun.

Biggio got the first three hits of his major league career today, the second of which was also his first homerun.

And Mike Yastrzemski is three for three for the Giants today through seven innings - he was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single on his first hit, but then did get a double in the seventh inning.
