Rivercats eyeing Giants affiliation.

Cleveland—- The A’s have enjoyed a terrific relationship with the Sacramento River Cats ever since the Triple-A club moved to California’s capital in 2000. Among other things, the River Cats have won seven Pacific Coast League titles in that span, and they led minor-league baseball in attendance for eight years.

Can the Giants block the A's from moving a AAA team to San Jose?

Yes.

Maybe just move the A's to Sacramento and be done with it?

I foresee some musical player development contracts in AAA for the 2015 season. There is a metric crapload of expiring PDCs in both the IL and PCL at the end of this season. The Brewers' contract with Nashville is up and they're getting a new ballpark so that may be attractive to some teams.

Someone's going to end up with the gag prize of the Las Vegas affiliation. It was the Mets the last time a load of PDCs expired.

Basically it's every two years that we have one of these shuffles, right?

Certainly looks like Sacramento intends to make a switch. And one wouldn't expect Wolff to throw them any bones to keep the status quo. But yeah, the A's should hope to get Fresno and not end up in a PCL launching pad.

IF the A's don't put up some kind of fight over this it's yet more evidence of their inept marketing (and this is a brilliant marketing move for the Giants). Sacramento is mostly Giants territory but there are a ton of A's fans up here and lots of kids are very attached to the Rivercats.

We know the Mets would love to return to the IL, but where? Syracuse and the Nats are signed through '18, Rochester probably isn't interested in ditching the Twins and Buffalo was a Mets affiliate not so long ago and likely wants to stay with the Jays.

I feel bad for Fresno. That's been a good partnership on all fronts, and they've done nothing to lose the Giants. That said, the A's will likely be their consolation prize.

But this feels rather damning. Sacramento being such Giants country that the local AAA team thinks they can make more money with the Giants is an indictment of how the A's have systematically bled fans for the last 20 years. Sactown was A's country.

While your broad point about the A's bumbling is (sadly) spot-on, I'm not so sure Sacto is no longer A's country. The A's have said many times over the years that a measurable portion of their attendance is from Sacramento. The record crowds at River Cats games are there to watch A's prospects, not Giants prospects.

I'm not flatly disagreeing with you, Flynn, but I suspect this is more a negotiating posture by the River Cats than it is a reflection of shifting Sacramento fandom.
