Robinson Cano blames scoreboard error for not running out a double-play grounder

Robinson Cano’s not-very-great debut season for the New York Mets got a little worse on Friday, entirely by his own hand.

Facing Miami Marlins pitcher Adam Conley with men on first and second and one out in the seventh inning, Cano tapped a hard grounder back to the pitchers mound. It was an easy double play ball, and that’s exactly what happened with Cano out at first by at least 15 feet.

As the Mets’ broadcast put it, “Cano didn’t even bother trying to run, just jogged slowly down to first.”

And this is why you need to be able to keep score without a scorecard!

I watched Cano play for 9 years with the Yankees. I guess there was a major problem with the scoreboard operator during that whole period.

Woof.

The Marlins scored 8 runs, which is the same as the combined total of runs they'd scored in the 7 game losing streak that preceded the game.

The scoreboard operator wasn't used to having to put Marlins runs on the board, so no wonder he screwed up!

Jorge Algaro hit the second Marlins' home run in May. Jeter schadenfreude at this level isn't even fun.

The Marlins have 25 HR. Yelich and Ozuna alone have 31.

Another scoreboard error today as Cano does not even run at all on a nubber in front of the plate. Woof indeed. Even Met announcer Keith Hernandez called the play "inexcusable." Great signing there, Brodie.

Well of course he didn't run. Isn't he one of those lazy black players everyone complains about? Or is he a lazy player who happens to be black?

Man, I forget how these things are supposed to go.

#8: did you see the play today? It was...a huge wtf for Cano, esp in light of Friday night. If he doesn't find himself on the bench for their next game, Mickey deserves to be out of a job. With the team struggling to score, Cano grounded into two double plays today, and literally didn't leave the batter's box on one of them.

Nah, only had time to throw out the sarcastic remark regarding race and work ethic to try to get a few chuckles.

Cano has never been historically the quickest cat out of the box, so I'm not surprised by this latest episode.

I'm more concerned with the lack of production than the lack of hustle. In a theoretical world where every Met is healthy, I'm not sure Cano is even good enough to be in the lineup.

Yeah, this is how Cano has rolled pretty much his entire career. When he’s hitting .320 with 25 dingers no one really cares. He’s hardly unique in this regard either, it’s all too common. Drives me nuts but ultimately if a guy produces it can be overlooked.

What was he arguing about?

There was nothing he could possibly have objected to, unless he doesn't know the rules (and then there was nothing he could have legitimately objected to).

Cano obviously thought it was a foul ball. I mean, he should have run it out anyway, but it's not like he just totally gave up on the play.

But the only way he could think that is if he doesn't know the rules. It didn't hit him, and it was clearly in fair territory when it was grabbed.

This same thing happened to the Mets in the world series vs the Yanks, right? I have partially suppressed the memory.

The only think I could think of was that he thought that since the ball started in foul territory-- he hit it straight down such that it bounced behind home plate first-- it was therefore foul. Of course, it bounced forward into fair territory from there, so...

The only way that Cano can make up for this career altering mistake is by regaining his 2018 batting form. Otherwise beware of the wrath of the almighty (W)FAN.
