Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: Lirano called up

Oh sure, you could have ESPN.com, but guess what, this is where I saw the news first, so get over it.

The Minnesota Twins called up the red-hot left-handed starting pitcher on Friday for the stretch playoff run and Liriano is slated to pitch Sunday at home against the Cleveland Indians.

Liriano and first baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz were promoted from the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings while veterans Livan Hernandez and Craig Monroe were released.

Liriano, who is 10-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 19 starts with Rochester, was 10-0 with a 2.67 ERA in his past 11 starts. He was sent to Rochester on April 12 and will take Hernandez’s spot in the rotation.

Ruiz, Rochester’s most-consistent hitter this season, recently recorded a 24-game hit streak, the longest in the International League this year, and was hitting .320 with 17 home runs and 68 RBI in 111 games for the Wings.

My fantasy team (and thousands of others, I'm sure) says THANK GOD! IT'S ABOUT TIME!

Minnesota is close to 1st place, despite their GM. How on earth could they have spent the past two months preferring to start Livan over Liriano? They were starting someone who was near the bottom of MLB starters, while keeping one of the best in the minors, just to try and save money (delaying Liriano's arb eligibility, and hoping they could trade Livan, and in the end, they couldn't even trade Livan). This is the same GM who turned down a much better trade offer from the Red Sox for Johan Santana (compared to what the Mets offered). Imagine if the Twins actually just KEPT SANTANA this year. They'd be in 1st place, and a lock for the playoffs, with a real chance to win it all. Looking at what the Dodgers gave up for Manny mid-season, it is clear that if the Twins were in last place, they could have dealt Santana for quite a haul in July (and yes, Johan would have approved it). It is hard to root for a team where the ownership has so little commitment to winning.
