Rockies’ end-of-season rotation analysis: Kyle Freeland, German Marquez shined; Jon Gray fizzled

The secret to the Rockies’ success in 2018 was no secret at all.

“I think it’s pretty easy. I think it’s the starting pitching honestly, giving us a chance to win every game, game in and game out,”  all-star third baseman Nolan Arenado said.

Numbers illustrate Arenado’s words. Colorado’s rotation:

-Posted a 4.17 ERA, the second-lowest in franchise history (2009 playoff had a 4.10 ERA);
-Had 84 quality starts, the third-most in franchise history
-Struck out 883, sixth in the National League and by far the most in franchise history. (2010 team had 779).

The starting staff was good and they remained remarkably healthy.

They used 7 starters all season. 6 had 162 of the starts. Senzatela basically replaced Bettis when the latter had some injuries. Jeff Hoffman, who came over from Toronto in the Tulo trade, made the other start.

As you'd expect, the letter grades in the article are goofy.

Tyler Anderson got a "C" for a 3 WAR year, incl. a good performance in game #162 to clinch the one-game playoff, and another good start in the LDS.

Starting pitching is difficult to come by.

There's gotta be some way to fix Jon Gray. I suppose he's one of those guys whose ERA is always going to be a lot higher than his peripherals would suggest.

The story on Gray is that he always seems to be sailing along doing fine, then has a disaster inning. I wonder if they should work on his mechanics out of the stretch. He was much better this year with no runners on (.703 OPS allowed) than with runners on (.845). With only a runner on first, when he presumably would be focused on holding that runner, he allowed an absurd slash line of .361/.426/.526. If they can teach him how to pitch with a man on first, whether that's a mechanical or a mental adjustment, he'll be fine.

Gray's the anti-Freeland. Each year his ERA has been a lot higher than his FIP, even when the splits for runners on/bases empty are in favor of runners on. Anecdotally, it seems he's had a lot of those starts where he K's 10 and walks 2 in 5 innings, but gives up 5 runs.
