Rockies have “handshake agreement” with manager Jim Tracy on extension

In a world where baseball was king… one man… when your life is no longer your own, when every move you make is wrong…

The Rockies announced this evening via their official Twitter account that they have a “handshake agreement” on a contract extension with manager Jim Tracy… Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd released the following statement on the extension:

“We expect this relationship to continue for a number of years. We are building a culture of value together in a world of performance.” ...

Tracy owns a 230-210 record (.523) since taking over as Colorado’s skipper when Clint Hurdle was fired in May of 2009, but the Rockies are coming off a disappointing 73-89 season.

I thought this meant the official announcement was forthcoming. But the details are curious; sounds like Tracy is on the Tim Wakefield plan:

In an offseason defined by change, general manager Dan O'Dowd made a stunning commitment to stability Monday, naming Jim Tracy the team's manager "indefinitely" with a handshake agreement.

...O'Dowd said there's no term attached the extension, though it covers at the minimum the 2013 season.

"Basically what I am saying is that I should never have this conversation with you again," O'Dowd said. "To say it extends just beyond 2013 would not do justice to Jim. It could be until he's using a cane and having trouble getting onto the field. Quite honestly, it can be for whatever

I guess the underachievement the past year plus really was Ian Stewart and Chris Ianetta's fault.

O'Dowd has already taken shots at Jhoulys Chacin for spending the offseason in Venezuela instead of in the US at Camp Tulo or somewhere similar.

The organization has really taken some bold steps backwards in the last couple of years. The 2007 and 2009 playoff teams were both built almost entirely from home-grown players, which you think would have taught O'Dowd some sort of lesson. But they spent this off-season jettisoning young veterans in favor of mediocrities in their mid-30s. And now this. I don't hate Jim Tracy, but he surely had a poor year as manager last season, and I can't see any reason why they need to make a commitment to him at this point. They're going to go something like 67-95 in 2012, at which point we'll see just how durable that handshake is.

Not very, I'd say. A handshake agreement is no agreement at all. It's a nice way for the Rockies to try to get around making Tracy an obvious lame duck manager, I guess, but if I were Jim Tracy, I might like the Rockies to express their undying devotion to me with some guarantees.
