Rockies To Sign Justin Morneau

In the tradition of “Dumping Doug Fister So You Can Afford Joe Nathan” comes “Dumping Dexter Fowler So You Can…”

The Rockies have agreed to sign Justin Morneau to a two-year deal worth roughly $13MM, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter).

Morneau hit .259/.323/.411 with 17 homers in 2013, a slash line is a slight improvement over that of a league-average hitter, and his .152 isolated power mark is also slightly above the league average of .146.

The Rockies continue to remain the weirdest team in MLB.

As with the Byrd deal, I'm glad he got paid, and I'm glad it wasn't the Pirates who gave him that deal.

100% agreed. Pirates should blow everyone away with big offers to Cano and Napoli and then let the good times roll.

big offers to Cano

Walker to third, Pedro to first?

Wouldn't keeping Fowler and moving Cuddyer to first have made all the sense in the world?

My gut feeling is that it was a good time to trade Cuddyer. Thirty four years old coming off his best season, likely the result of a fluky uptick in BABIP

They missed their old faded first baseman so much they had to another.

I mentioned this in another thread, but from what the beat writers are writing, they may see Morneau as a platoon first baseman:

Morneau, if used correctly, could provide veteran leadership, strong first base defense (something that can’t be discounted for Todd Helton’s replacement) and a weapon against right-handed pitching. There are concerns from scouts I trust that Morneau’s bat has slowed after he batted .259 with 17 home runs and 53 extra-base hits last season.

But the last three seasons have shown him to be a credible force against righties. He has hit .282 with a .355 on-base percentage, while averaging an extra-base hit every 8.9 at-bats. That figure would likely get a bump at Coors Field. He has just five home runs against lefties the last three seasons. [Renck]

Morneau starts vs righties, Rosario moves to 1st vs lefties? Or maybe that's just Renck.
