Rockies trade Hirsh to Yankees

New York Times Yankees beat writer Tyler Kepner is reporting on his Twitter feed that the Yankees have traded for Rockies pitcher Jason Hirsh, who has spent the past two seasons battling injuries and pitching at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The Rockies will possibly receive a player to be named later, but the move was designed to help out the Yankees, who needed a player at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, and Hirsh, who the Rockies felt had run his course with the organization. Hirsh will pitch at Triple-A for the Yankees.

Hirsh was doing all right for the Rockies as a fifth starter in 2007 before a game against the Mets on July 2. The Rockies were up 6-0 in the sixth inning when Hirsh singled and evntually made it around to third base. While he was there, Paul LoDuca fired the ball down to third in an attempt to pick off Hirsh. In a 6-0 game. Hirsh, who had run the bases approximately once before in his career, got back easily but stepped awkwardly on third base, spraining his ankle and going on the DL after the game.

He's been hurt more or less ever since. Thanks a lot, Lo Douchea.

I thought the story was that he broke his fibula when hit by hard shot in an August game against the Brewers. He came up with a shoulder problem the following spring training, and has never thrown the same.

As I mentioned in the dugout, he will be sent to a Yankees lab to receive whatever treatment they gave Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon.

That too.

So with Taylor Buchholz getting TJ surgery, the Rockies won't have a single player from the Jason Jennings trade appear in a game for them this year. Yet they still won that trade handily.
