Rogers: Cincinnati Reds’ Dusty Baker heads list of managers on thin ice

The Reds need a strong finish to end talk about Dusty Baker walking the managerial plank. Other managers in limbo are the Indians’  Eric Wedge, Nationals’  Jim Riggleman, Astros’  Cecil Cooper and Orioles’  Dave Trembley. ...

The Twins’ Joe Crede’s recurring back injuries could prompt him to retire after the season. He has had surgery the last two off-seasons and needed an epidural on his back last week. ...

Jorge Posada has taken a beating behind the plate this season. He’s 38 and bears watching carefully in September. His health is essential for the Yankees. ...

The Orioles’ Brian Roberts is on the verge of his third 50-plus doubles season. He will join Tris Speaker, Paul Waner and Stan Musial as the only players to do it. ...

The Royals are worried about first baseman Eric Hosmer, whom they took with the third overall pick in last year’s draft. He’s having vision problems, which they hope Lasik surgery will correct. ...

Thanks to Chave.

Dusty on thin ice? Why?

John McGraw wouldn't be winning much of anything with this sad franchise.

100 percent true.

OTOH, John McGraw also wouldn't have given Willy (.238/.273/.284) Taveras 79 starts in the leadoff spot.

Cincinnati has the worst offense in the league. 3.97 runs/game in spite of being in a very offense-friendly park.

San Diego is at 3.87, but the difference between their home park and Cincinnati's in terms of effects on offense is 15% (90 for SD, 105 for Cincy).

Dusty has been adamant that injuries wrecked their season.

if it was dusty's idea to sign/use willy t, then he got a problem

if the GM signed willy t and told dusty to play him, that is a different thing

but i haven't heard that he's lost the clubhouse, like cooper has

Reds' management expected to be competitive. They shouldn't have, but they did.

Boswell says Bobby V is not being considered by the Nats (too many ties to Bowden). Tom is not enthused about Melvin as a candidate, and says Willie Randolph would be too passive for this team (Acta II, I guess). The former Yankee Boz wants to manage the Nats next year is Don Mattingly, though some of his family problems could get in the way and Don may want a more high-profile stage than Washington, which still has to prove to people in MLB that it's not a baseball graveyard (or that it's no more than a stepping stone). They may have to keep Riggleman by default; they could do worse. Dusty Baker, for instance (I never want him wearing the same uniform as Strasburg).

What if they're both groomsmen at Adam Dunn's wedding?

It will take Baker a long time to lose the clubhouse if the team remains bad. He gets along well with most of his players. If the team becomes competitive, then pulling stunts like leading off Willy Taveras will cause him to lose the clubhouse, unless they make the playoffs anyway.

Its expected in L.A. that the Dodgers pretty much are setting up Don Mattingly to succeed Joe Torre after 2010. Because that's what Torre wants.

But, but...I thought Dusty Baker could turn babies into gold!

Every year it seemse people defend Dusty by pointing out that the skinny black dudes on his team are crappy and thus not his fault because the GM signs the players. The problem is that Dusty's teams are always filled with skinny black duded who can't hit worth a darn. Dusty surrounds himself with Dusty players and they suck. The fact that they suck is his fault and it is ownership's fault for signing Dusty because if you didn't know he was going to want these crappy guys arround then you weren't doing your homework.

OK, if Mattingly doesn't want the Washington job and Riggleman is not retained, who should the Nationals pursue to manage in 2010?

will the Reds really eat Dusty's $4mil contract next season? doesn't seem likely to me.

Yeah, you made me look.

I met the man a few years ago. I directed him to the men's room.

Abe Vigoda should manage the Marlins and the Marlins only (baseball-wise)

Nothing leads to more damage than management's mistaken belief of a team's true place in the success cycle.

He should get some skinny white dudes who can't hit. Scott Podsednik would be a good start.

The Reds are starting Drew Stubbs in Center Field today.

Wasn't aware he was white. Good for Dusty, getting on the diversity bandwagon ;-)

Well, they wasted the 8th pick of the 2006 draft on him.

Wonder if Reds fans go "WE COULD OF HAD ####### TIMMAH. TIMMAH!!!" every time Stubbs strikes out.
