Ron Coomer will be new Cubs radio analyst

Ron Coomer will be the Cubs’ new radio analyst. The Tribune has confirmed he agreed to a two-deal that will be announced Friday to replace Keith Moreland in the WGN-AM 720 booth alongside play-by-play man Pat Hughes.

He became the clear front-runner as the other reported finalist, Todd Hollandsworth, took a full-time position with the MLB Radio Network, according to industry sources.

Coomer, 47, played for the Cubs in 2001 during a nine-year career mostly as a corner infielder. The Lockport High School graduate has been a TV studio analyst for the Twins.

Ahhh... a boring pick to take a boring job in a boring offseason.

In other news, the Cubs have announced that Lunestra will be the official sponsor of the 2014 season.

Coomer was in the 1999 All Star Game and came to bat to start off one of the inning. Whatever inning it was was the inning that Carlton Fisk went out to coach first base. Fisk is my mother's favorite player so I snapped a picture that has Fisk in the coach's box with a big sign on the scoreboard announcing Coomer coming up. If you don't know it's Fisk it looks like I was very excited that Ron Coomer was coming to bat.

Not even Ron Coomer was ever excited to see him coming up to bat...

It was either Coomer or Uncle Joey. They made the better pick.

#5 never gets old. Right up there with the "Look at Mills, Look at Mills!" and "look at the sugar falling from the sky" amongst greatest 'excited utterances' in sports broadcast history.

As a child, I hated Ron Coomer. And emotionally, I'm still pretty much a child.

Oddly enough, Coomer and Fisk are pretty good friends. I've heard them in the broadcast booth together. From the Boston Herald, 1999:

"Coomer, who plays third base for the Minnesota Twins, and the former Red Sox catcher became acquainted 15 years ago when he was a student-athlete at Lockport High School in suburban Chicago. Fisk relocated his family to Lockport when he left the Red Sox for the Chicago White Sox after the 1980 season. Fisk, whose three children went to Lockport High, began working with Coomer on hitting during the winter months when both were idle."

Wow, that's incredibly interesting. I wonder if it wasn't a coincidence then that Fisk coached first base that inning. I have to look up to see what Coomer did...bah, he whiffed. Oh well.

Coomer's leaving Twins broadcasts? Good riddance.
