Rosenthal: Big Unit excited to be back on the mound

RobothalRealm is a powerful robotic vision at all times!

Johnson, generally moody, seems almost buoyant afterward as he chats with reporters, ice packs covering his shoulder and back. His goals for the day, he says, were, “Have some fun, don’t fall on my face, don’t kill any hitters.” Mission accomplished.

The subject of his stormy two-year tenure with the Yankees is raised, and Johnson says he enjoyed the restaurants. He adds, “Either year I had there, I’d be willing to take. I think the Diamondbacks would be, too.”

Johnson won 17 games in each of those seasons, and another 17 would get him past 300. He deflects questions about the milestone, saying that he only wants to get through his next spring-training start. But Johnson heard all the talk last season about Tom Glavine probably being the last 300-game winner. He didn’t buy it then, and he doesn’t buy it now.

Either year I had there, I’d be willing to take.

If I were he, I'd be a bit less sanguine about an ERA of 5.

"Big Unit excited to be back on the mound"

do they make this stuff up unwittingly, or do they KNOW how this sounds?

Reminds me of Rosanne Barr's low expectations for herself as a mom back in her standup days -"Hey, if you come home from work and those kids are still alive, I've done my job!"

Check out his peripherals - he was actually pretty good that year. Certainly better than his ERA.

Well I'll be dipped, my quick DIPS Excel sheet sez 4.28. But still, I bet he's just looking at 17 victories and figuring, hey, good season.

trust me, Randy is very aware that his ERA did not reflect the quality of his peripherals that year.

It's better than "Big Unit Unexcited By Return To The Rubber"

And yes, it took me way too long to think of that.

As a fan, would you be happy if someone with foresight told you one of your pitchers would win 20 games but his ERA would be 5.50? I would. I'd think, crappy pitcher, but my offense is going to be awesome this year.

well, certainly not when the rubber meets the road

[edit] referring to post 7, of course

Yes, very careless to use his suggestive nickname. Why not the cool and businesslike "Randy Johnson excited to be back on the mound"?

:-)
