Rosenthal: Red Sox can rebound easily

SEARCHING LIFE FORM:

[Adrian] Beltre: The [Red] Sox want him back at the right price, but do not necessarily need him. They can move [Kevin] Youkilis to third, find a one-year stopgap at first, then go nuts for a first baseman after next season, when Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder all could hit the market…

[David] Ortiz: He told WEEI last week that he wouldn’t feel “comfortable” playing under a one-year deal if the Red Sox exercised his $12.5 million club option next season.

One option for the Mets as they plot their future is to hire an executive above general manager Omar Minaya, an accomplished veteran to restore credibility to their franchise.

Among them: Former Rangers and Indians GM John Hart, outgoing Nationals president Stan Kasten and former A’s GM and Padres CEO Sandy Alderson.

File this name for future reference: Hitoshi Tamura.

At that point they could trade Youkilis

/facepalm X infinity.

Too bad.

As for the rest, I really don't agree. Most of the players who did well for the team who weren't hurt had seasons that were either a) out of line with what they normally do, or b) involve players that aren't going to be around next year, probably.

So the Mets need to hire an accomplished veteran baseball man with credibility just to fire Minaya? Wouldn't it be easier for the Wilpons just to fire Omar themselves?

And can we please stop pretending that Albert Pujols is ever going to be a free agent? Thank you.

Yeah the sword of damocles hanging above Minaya's head will just totally ensure there's no pointless short-term moves that hurt the long-term development of the mets.

Sorry but if you don't want a guy to be your GM at least have the decency to put him out of his misery.

They can move [Kevin] Youkilis to third

Can they? Is he still serviceable there?

Yes, every time they put him back there he's been fine. At some point, he won't be, but I'd be very comfortable with him there for a year.

This year, that is a grand total of twice, for 15 innings.

I think Youkilis would be below average defensively at third, but he's got a very large cushion - Tango's positional adjustments have the difference between 1B and 3B at 10 runs per year, and Fangraphs says 15 runs. I think Youkilis would be better than -10 at third base, so it would work out just fine. Better than fine, really.

In 2009 he played 60 games at third base and defended the position competently.

Plus 30 games in 2008 and 10 in 2007. Any Sox fan has seen a lot of Youkilis at third in recent years.

Your endpoints are pretty suspect, is all I'm saying.

Hmmm, it's almost as if this year the Red Sox have another option at third base that they hadn't had before.

But if you think he's a very good 1B (available stats seem to have him at +5-10) it's a different calculation. He needs to be average or very close to make it a wash.

Oooh, cryptic. Japanese outfielder entering his mid-30s (he'll be 34 in March). Presumably he's planning to make the jump to MLB?

I think Youk will be a good third baseman, he always has been in the past. There are three reasons for concern though;

1. He has only played two games over there this year. Practice makes perfect.

2. He is 32 next year, that's an age where players start moving TO first base, not FROM first base.

3. I wonder if the hand injury is the type of thing that would cause him to have a problem throwing.

Like I said, I think he'll be just fine but I don't think it is a lock or anything close to it. If they can sign Dunn or trade for Gonzalez/Fielder they should do it but I would hate to see an Overbay type brought in.

as a yankee fan, I look forward to the Prince Fielder 8 year deal in Boston.

That's what it says on the waistband of his underpants.

Sorry, the American Law of Baseball Names states that anyone named Hitoshi must be a pitcher, just like anyone named Fielder must be a hitoshi.
