Rosenthal: Reds have prospects to make noise

Opening up the Rosenotebook…

Of course, the Cubs could always trade Pie if they acquired Crisp, and one rival scout thinks such a move would be best for all involved.

“Pie needs to leave the organization to succeed or fail,” the scout says. “The Cubs won’t let him fail. They will always pull the plug. They’re not willing to give him a 300- to 400-at-bat commitment.

“He’s got tools. He needs to learn how to play within his tools. And the only way to do that is through major-league experience.”

Manager Lou Piniella often prefers veterans, but Pie needs to get that experience with the Cubs. The Yankees committed to Melky Cabrera in center. The Red Sox are set to do the same with Jacoby Ellsbury. The Cubs would look foolish turning away from Pie, who only recently turned 23.

Pie's getting the Cubs' starting job. That talk about trading for Crisp is silliness.

Reds have prospects to make noise

Heh. Not if the prospects don't play.

I dunno, there have been plenty of Cubs over the years who would have been a lot better off turning away from pie, especially if it were 23 years old.

I'm not an expert, but "learning how to play within your tools" sounds exactly like what the minor leagues are for.

And this article on pie day, no less.

He killed AAA pitching to the tune of .362/.410/.563 last season. If he is to become a major league regular he needs to learn how to duplicate his minor league success against major league pitching.

Felix Pie has earned a job in the major leagues. While I am delighted that the Cubs seem hesitant to give him a job, as a fan I am baffled as to what the organization expects a young player to do to merit an everyday role with the big league club.

Seriously. What is the expectation? Any Cub fans care to offer a suggestion?

Not if he isn't challanged in the minors.

Yep. Krivsky and Dusty seem intent on Patterson in center. I guess they don't see him as the sympathy fcuk that the rest of us do.

Be 30.

And for the rotation to succeed, the White Sox need Jose Contreras to revive and both John Danks and Gavin Floyd to perform to Williams' expectations.

If all that happens, the Sox's confidence will prove justified

Well, geez, if we're going down that path then the Orioles can win if all the Red Sox players get mono, the Yankees all break their legs, and the Blue Jays lose their passports.

"Corey Patterson, Sympathy Fcuk." Tremendous. Someone should adopt that as his/her handle.

Pretty sure the Rays (nee Devil) are also better than the Orioles.

He forgot to mention the hurricane that wipes out Southwest Florida...
