Rosenthal: Rockies could be in market to trade Holliday

The Rockies, 10 games back in the NL West, almost certainly would consider trading Holliday, knowing they stand little chance of keeping him long-term.

Holliday, 28, could be this year’s Mark Teixeira — a Scott Boras client traded with a year-plus remaining on his contract by a team seeking value for a franchise-type player.

The Rockies signed Holliday to a two-year, $23 million deal in January, but could lose him as a free agent after the 2009 season and receive only draft picks in return.

It's been established for almost a decade that taking the away numbers for a player leaving Colorado gives you a terrible underestimation of a player's value.

Wonder if the Braves get in on this. They have the chips, and once Tex leaves, the budget to re-sign him too.

There is that brain dead hick in RF, who does an impersonation of one from time to time.
And ofcourse, we would see a Terence Moore column too complaining about how Braves only trade for white players. Its a win-win!

The distance between the times can be very long.

I'd agree with this. But it sure seemed to hold true for J Hammonds.

The problem with Hammonds was more that the Brewers signed an injury-prone outfielder right as he was leaving his prime and heading into a shoulder injury. Despite the huge home/road splits in his year in Colorado, the entire 2000 season was entirely in keeping with his career to that point. I think the similarity between his '00 road stats and his performance in Milwaukee was just an amusing coincidence.

I wouldn't entirely count the Angels out. Vlad is having the roughest start to his season in his career, Garret Anderson will be gone after this year, and they have zilch on the farm to replace either one. (Vlad's start is so cold, in fact, that he's accumulating value at less than half the rate of his crosstown counterpart Matt Kemp, an astonishing fact.) I just don't know if they have the parts anymore. Pretty much everything they have of real value is spoken for on the 2009 team (Nick Adenhart, and any of the good young players currently on the 25-man).

I don't know about the baseball perspective, but from a PR standpoint, this sounds like a nightmare. It'd be sad to see the Rockies' fanbase turn on the team one year removed from a World Series appearance.

That's going to happen if they lose, regardless of whether they trade Holliday or not. But, to keep face, they're going to have to get MLB players in return, prospects won't cut it. It's not like a fire sale, they'll still have Francis, Cook, Tulowitzki, Helton, etc.

Speaking from Colorado, it'd be pretty nice to see the Rockies' fanbase, period. On the other hand, Rockies tickets had to be the best bargain in baseball last year. One time we paid $15 apiece for seats on the first row of the upper level, directly behind home plate, with hot dogs, a drink, and parking included.
