Rosenthal: Social media present challenges for GMs

Only when Flirtomatic takes up more time than Strat-O-Matic.

Your sympathy should go only so far — being a G.M. is a pretty sweet gig, and Ken Williams acknowledges that he is fortunate to hold the position. But talking to him Saturday, I started thinking about my own place — and the places of other baseball writers — in Williams’ universe.

And yes, I felt a little uneasy.

General managers of high-profile teams probably could spend four hours a day answering media requests. The competition for news is fierce, but journalism — in sports, politics and other fields — is not necessarily better for it.

Early in my career, I would lose sleep if I reported something inaccurately, even worry about losing my job. The standards now are much lower; too often, the emphasis is on being first rather than factual. Many stories lack nuance and context, particularly when reported in 140-character tweets.

I’m not preaching from any mountaintop here — I pride myself on accuracy, but occasionally make mistakes, too. It is the nature of the business now. It is not a step forward. And from the perspective of an executive such as Williams, it is just one more hassle.

All GMs should get Twitter accounts and constantly tweet about everything they do, say, or think.
That should eliminate the scary potential of someone like Rosenthal reporting something inaccurate.

Rosenthal: Social media presents challenges for GMs

Because they are anti-social, basement-dwelling dorks, obviously...

The obvious solution is publish all scoops in the form of Latin cryptograms, which will be decoded only when the story pans out. Then you could open up the newspaper and read the headlines:

Posnanski Exclusive!
R LYHVIEVW GSV SRTSVHG KOZMVG (GLYV) GSIVV-YLWRVW

Last week's scoop (decoded): Macula rufa in Jove est gyratur mathem etc.

It's like a combination of the front page and the crossword puzzle.

All media is social. And socialist. Ray said so.

Social media isn't the problem, THIS is the problem. When writers can just say whatever the hell they want without any need for accuracy or fairness, it becomes a real problem. It's one thing when it's bloggers doing it but to have mainstream sites operating this way is bad news.

#1,3 What you're collectively advocating is encrypted Gonzo tweeting. Makes me happy to be entering my GOML years.

In all seriousness, does Twitter (or some equivalent) alleviate the need for press conferences? I assume that the point of a press conference is to get the word out on something. LIke announcing a contract. Is there any reason that Bill Smith couldn't Tweet the Mauer contract in 30 seconds and save himself the hassle of a press conference?

A press conference presumably would include a question and answer portion. I don't see why a press release sent by website, e-mail or fax would be any different from Twitter but the press conference would provide the opportunity for a Q&A;.

I think the Twins would want a press conference to get the free media. A press conference provides with you pretty pictures of Mauer and Smith shaking hands on the nightly news. Its essentially a nice commercial for the Twins to get people excited about buying their product. Twitter doesn't really provide you with that.

Like Jose said, Twitter is a lot like a press release, which teams will often employ for more minor transactions.

A Twin Twitter has a nice ring to it.

I'm not a twitter fan, but I'm at a loss to understand why this is such a huge problem for GMs. The "problem" can only exist if there is a lot of interest in the team. That is a good thing, not a bad thing. 24/7 coverage and numerous bloggers tweating about your team is portrayed as a some deeply upsetting challenge to the GM. Baseball is an entertainment business and many people in the entertainment business would pay for that kind of problem.

Last year, the Astros hired a mlb.com writer to manage their social web site communications (facebook, twitter, etc.) and take advantage of the new media. If Williams' issue is that it takes up too much of his time, then hire people to manage that side of the business.
