Rosenthal: Sources: Oswalt throwing for teams

Heads up Morrie Rath!

Roy Oswalt is back in play.

Oswalt, a free-agent right-hander, threw bullpen sessions for the Philadelphia Phillies last week and the Boston Red Sox this week, according to major-league sources.

He is scheduled to throw for two additional teams, one on Friday, one source said. The identities of those teams are not known.

Oswalt intends to sign with a team soon, possibly within the next week, and could pitch in the majors by mid- to late June, sources said.

The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers are not in the mix for Oswalt at this time, sources said.

Boston better get him. They ####### need him.

I thought he wanted to play for a winner.

I wonder if the Orioles are one of the teams. That would have been unthinkable a couple months ago, but now it seems somewhat plausible.

Agree with #3...would be a great fit/help.

I thought he wanted to play for a winner.

That stung more than I thought it would.

He would be a huge help for the Os, but I just can't see him buying in to that being the right situation for him.

I hope I'm wrong.

The Cardinals may be involved. They had talks with Oswalt, but passed because they had both Wainwright and Carpenter returning. Things have changed from that happy state now.... - Brock Hanke

Please be Cleveland.

Get him to come to Detroit...then trade him for some offense.

I disagree. What the Red Sox need is:

1) Their high-paid starting pitchers to act like they deserve to be front-of-the-rotation starters. If the Sox get Oswalt, what do they do? Demote Doubront? Doubront has pitched well. Move Bard to the bullpen? Last night excepted, Bard has been good, and the bullpen has been fantastic since the Yankee Debacle several weeks ago. I guess you could demote Buchholz, but he seems to be gtetting it together, and if you demote him to AAA to figure things out, you have to expose him on waivers, which is risky.

2) They need Ellsbury and Crawford to come back healthy and play well. Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney have been as good or better than any fan could've hoped for, but playing Byrd or MacDonald is just giving away ABs.

Oswalt doesn't solve any Boston problems...

I know that IF the starters ALL figure it out, and IF Ellsbury and Crawford come back AND play to their potential, the Sox should be fine. Would you bet that all those things will happen? The problem of no room in the rotation is a real one but those things tend to work themselves out pretty quickly.

Maybe Wang's presence in the wing makes this moot, but if the Nationals think they can hang in the race for the postseason until the end, it might be smart to sign Oswalt, work him into the rotation as a spot starter, then take over Strasburg's slot once he is shut down for the season (a la Zimmermann in 2011).

I gotta disagree. Bard's control has really deteriorated, and his K/9 has plummeted. Fortunately he doesn't give up a lot of HR, otherwise he'd be in a lot of trouble. He hasn't been a disaster, but Bard does not look like a promising starter to me at this point.

since the brewers refuse to try peralta they should try oswalt.
