Rosenthal: Sources: White Sox add Colon to rotation

The White Sox and [Bartolo] Colon have agreed to a one-year deal, according to major-league sources.

The deal is pending a physical.

The Sox needed to sign Colon to achieve their aggregate weight total from last season. It takes a big man to replace Uribe.

So many potential jokes. The only problem is that I'm not funny.

With Colon in it, wouldn't that make the rotation something more like an orbit?

Fourth starter? I was hoping for Pedro. Actually, I was hoping for someone who's not a huge injury risk, who could maybe even be a third starter.

Colon was OK when he pitched last year, wasn't he? I understand that he was injured for much of the year, though.

So I assume that the fifth starter spot is now an open competition between Richard and Broadway and everyone else, meaning...

SP1: Buehrle

SP2: Danks

SP3: Floyd

SP4: Colon

SP5: _____

That looks scary, especially if Danks and/or Floyd take a step back in 2009. (They combined for 401-2/3 innings of 3.58 ERA ball last year, although Floyd also allowed 19 unearned runs, so that's misleading.)

EDIT: Rosenthal says that Poreda is in the mix for a rotation spot. That seems hard to believe AND pretty aggressive, although I guess it's not unprecedented. He threw 87-2/3 pretty dominant innings at AA last season (72Ks, 22 walks, 5 HRs, 2.98 ERA). Birmingham is a pitcher's park, isn't it?

I so totally want to snark but ...

if there's one things Williams and the Sox have been GREAT at, it's finding healthy starting pitchers. Over the last 4 years, they've needed just 35 starts outside their intended rotation. Most teams need that many in a year.

So if Williams thinks Colon is healthy enough for a full season, I'll wait until Colon actually goes down before I say "I told you so." :-)

Walt is right, a lot of the White Sox success is that they have been magical at keeping their staff healthy, I'd be surprised if more that 2 or 3 teams in the expansion era have the track record like they do the past five seasons.

Plus, now that he has an AL team he is a lot more tradable in roto league where I stashed him for $2. :)

I'll break up the string of jokes to say that I like this signing. I haven't heard dollar figures, but I'm assuming that the contract's not too onerous. If Colon's healthy, he's a pretty decent fourth starter. If he's not, it's not going to kill the Sox. Exactly the sort of move I wanted to see Williams make. In fact, I wouldn't mind them getting Freddie Garcia, as well.
