I was like "what, huh, WTF" but didn't realize this was an old thread until I got to the part about the Cubs trying to get Sabathia.

Me too, though I didn't figure it out until I wondered for a moment if I'd missed some news about the Yankees' financial difficulties.

I was scrolling through trying to figure out why the phrase "Magglio has some value..." hadn't been countered, but it's early and I just started my coffee so I glanced over the part about Colletti trading LaRoche and just ignored the voice in my head saying "didn't Kent retire?" back into the fuzz.

Then I ran into my own post and kind of figured it out.

Ack. Thanks, baudib. I was quite literally a half-second away from posting this without noticing:

I was surprised that Rosenthal seems to imply the Tigers are still plugging along for 2008, I was under the impression that with 2/5th of their (theoritical) starting rotation either hurt or in single-A they would have given up the ghost by now.

Also, that was like, last year, man.

Then I ran into my own post and kind of figured it out.

*OCD SS looks around wildly, picks up his keyboard and peers underneath it* "But, I didn't say that!"

"Oh, wait."

Teehee.

(EDIT) Kevin must have posted in this thread, also.

Its the comparing Lastings Milledge to Matt Kemp part that gets me.

Such different paths these two players made.

If the Dodgers are patient, Kemp might prove more productive than Bay, Ordonez or even Holliday. But this is a team that has won only one postseason game in the past 20 years. Colletti needs to win. Manager Joe Torre wants to win. And Matt Kemp is one powerful chip.

Comparing current 2009 WAR:

Matt Kemp: 3.4
Jason Bay: 1.9
Matt Holliday: 1.8
Magglio Ordonez: 0.0

Wow. The metrics must see Kemp's defense as being excellent and Bay's poor. Not that that's a big surprise, but enough so that Kemp's WAR is almost double Bay's? That seems like a lot even accounting for position.

I didn't catch on until someone posted about the Tigers not having given up on 2008. I was going to snark on that before I realized something must be up.

I like how "in the long run" Kemp may outperform a list of guys. Long run, of course, being 2009 (arguably end of 2008).
   110. Tripon Posted: June 23, 2009 at 07:50 PM (#3229728)
Primakov,

Matt Kemp is 2nd among center fielders in UZR at 9.1
Jason Bay is at -7.6 in left field

I was confused when someone promoted trading Kemp for Manny.

Kemp is a very strange player to me. I only see him against the Angels, but this past weekend was the first time I've seen him do more than one good thing in a three-game series. When I usually see him, he demonstrates no ability to consistently get hits off of breaking balls, is clumsy defensively, and just seems to do nothing. Yet his statistics are very good. I guess I must just see him in his poorest games.

LMillz for President.

Kemp is not graceful, exactly--but to watch him go first to third is a thing of beauty.....he gets good reads on balls and is very fast.

I was also tricked by this thread. The Kemp for Manny part I thought was a joke and I nearly convinced myself that Kent hadn't retired.
   115. Drew (Primakov, Gungho Iguanas) Posted: June 24, 2009 at 01:14 PM (#3230710)
Thanks Tripon. Too lazy to look it up myself.

"What the hell would the Mets trade for him, anyway? Wright? Reyes? Santana? Y'all aren't exactly brimming with prime trade chips right now... "

Gary Sheffield, goodbye and good luck!

From supposed malcontent, to possible MVP candidate.

edit: Not top 3, but I can see Kemp picking up some down ballot votes, with some 4th, and 5th votes.

Zack Greinke and Mark Teahen for Matt Kemp and Chin Lung Hu

Now that's a great challenge trade where both teams would come out ahead.

It's lonely out here. I'll never understand the Kemp devotion that seems common here.

Mark my words: Matt Kemp will never be a star.

He K's 1 per 3.7 AB. That's not horrible but it's not good. He's shown no interest in taking walks yet. His BA is 299 this year on the basis of an unsustainable 414 on-contact BA which is nothing compared to last season's 442. His career BABIP (not on-contact) is 395.

He is young of course. There's plenty of room for power growth. He'll be an average or slightly better hitter for a corner OF and maybe he brings enough else to the table to be a good all-around player. But I won't be surprised if he never has a higher OPS+ than last year (125).

Kemp isn't anything that special and if I could trade him to guarantee a playoff spot, I'd probably do it. And given Bay is only 29 and Holliday 28, it's not like the Dodgers won't likely get a few more good years out of those guys.

On the other hand, I'd tell Kent to keep his mouth shut while he's putting up an 80 OPS+.

Even Walt can be wrong.

This thread makes me both chuckle and sweat about how close it seemed the Dodgers were to making a disastrous trade.

Matt Kemp didn’t really impress me last night. He played well and maybe I caught him on a bad night, but to me he didn’t seem dominant. Kemp may be hitting .300 with power and speed, but he doesn’t strike me as the dominant force that Willie Mays was during his statistical peak. Don’t get me wrong, Kemp played very effectively but he was not the unstoppable beast that Mays or Mantle (or even Duke Snider) were during their reign of dominance.

He reminds me of a right-handed Clint Hurdle. He has that big frame but good speed and sporadic hitting the ball 450 feet.

I love this meme! can we call it "throwing Rice", as in, "the DA just threw a little Rice at Matt Kemp"?

It didn't really work until this part, because Kemp really is nowhere near MAys or Mantle (whereas Greinke is quite a bit closer to the guys that Rices says he isn't)

BTW Clint Hurdle = Hermida
(Ok, sorry, that was actually a serious observation- look at their minor league numbers...)

But Kemp's age 22 and 23 seasons were much better than Mays's!
