Rosenthal: What’s the vibe in ChiSox clubhouse?

And scroll down to the Robottom for…

DARVISH: WORK IN PROGRESS

A scout who saw Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish against the Twins on Saturday was not especially impressed.

“He’s going to give up a ton of hits,” the scout said. “A lot of his fastballs are very straight. The guy is supposed to throw hard. But he basically pitched at 89 to 92, touching 93-94. That’s pretty good in Japan. It’s not very good here.

“He has a good cutter, a good curveball. But when he gets in trouble, he turns into a breaking-ball guy – nibble, nibble, he won’t let it go. He reminded me of Dice-K.”

...* A scout had an interesting take on Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, who is starting to look like a perennial All-Star:

“He must be a guy people like,” the scout said. “Throw it down the middle to him with two strikes, and if he takes it, the umpires call it a ball. They give him pitches at the plate. And he gets pitches for his pitchers.”

After blowing a 3-run lead in the 8th and 9th innings and imploding in the 10th last night, I'd bet the vibe is pretty bad:

I was at that game, and that scout is full of ####, basically. This strikes me as the rough equivalent of comparing two black players because they're black.

I wonder if the pendulum swing to sabermetrics is as much about the biased idiocy of scouting as it is the actual meaningfulness of the statistics. A third way that better combines both should be coming along, but right now we seem to be a bit stuck.

I think it's here. Maybe the ratio isn't perfected yet but I would bet that all 30 teams are doing some variant of stats and scouting and frankly they're idiots if they're not.

What’s the vibe in ChiSox clubhouse?

*secretly hoping for a Keefe on the use of vibrators in the White Sox clubhouse...*

Whats the vibe in Baltimore? Those guys are hitting like crazy. Reimold is on fire, Weiters seems to have finally found "it", and Jones is just nasty. I don't suppose it will last but they are surprising this year, just like they did in April of 2011.

Both of those comments are idiotic. Darvish has had two ML starts and a handful of spring training innings. Maybe he's nervous and a little out of sync. I've watched Wieters a million times and never noticed the umps being particularly kind to him on offense or defense. Those generous calls on defense sure didn't help the Orioles' pitching last year.

This is just horrible "some say" journalism.

A rival executive takes a less diplomatic view, saying that Guillen was an “inefficiency” who prevented the White Sox from reaching their full potential.

Keefe was traded to Miami.

“He reminded me of Dice-K.”

Uglier words have ne`er been said.
What a terrible thing to wish on a fan base.

Ask Lionel Hampton.

I just want to say that the highlight of my day yesterday was getting to hear the Top of the 10th called by Hawk. He's salty enough when the Sox are losing, but when they're playing in such spectacular first-half-of-Major-League fashion, it's worth recording for Hawk's commentary alone.

I don't know what's going on with De Aza in CF. Two days in a row he's flat missed a routine fly ball, this one opened the floodgates in extras and perhaps cost the Sox the game. I guess that's the sort of thing that just happens. When it happens 100 games apart it's a fluke, when it happens two days in a row it's a pattern.

He probably won't flub routine fly balls in consecutive games the rest of the year. I effing hope not.

I was at this game too. Throwing down the middle to Wieters with two strikes turned out to be a pretty bad idea, and I don't think the umps had much to do with it.

WTF was Ventura doing giving a rookie with control issues the closers job?
