Rosenthal: Why I voted Morneau for AL MVP

I voted for Justin Morneau for American League Most Valuable Player. But I’m glad Dustin Pedroia won.

Ok…it’s a wrap people. Let’s all go home.

Rosenthal was just worried that Pedroia could make more E.L. Fudges than him.

Well that reads like an apology.

or, "Why I Am an Idiot".

His works seems to have regressed significantly since he started doing TV. Maybe its osmosis from being around all those insightful colour guys.

For a young team — a team that lost Johan Santana and Torii Hunter last offseason, yet contended until Game No. 163 — Morneau's daily, steadying presence was invaluable, if difficult to quantify.

OK, that was my argument.

FOX Sports: Like FOX News, but Stupider.

Robothal is good at what he does

I love the guy, but what he does isn't insightful analysis

As long as he feeds me the rumors, he's all right. Of course, I'm not the type that wants to hear philosophy from my bartender, I just want the booze.

oh, how I wish I read Robothal articles more. Think of all the trenchent insight by poster "ALLNYTEAMsSUCK" I've been missing!

I didn't think that national guys got votes. Or is he part of some chapter?

The comments on FoxSports.com are absolutely phenomenal. Forget about the articles, just read the ridiculous comments, it's a hoot.

You should read the comments at marketwatch.com some day.

As Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe points out, Pedroia was the only player in the majors last season to finish with at least 175 hits, 75 runs, 75 RBIs, 15 homers, 20 stole bases while winning a Gold Glove.

He was also the only player in the majors last season named Pedroia, which is about as meaningful as that list of requirements. Plus, he can't even spell "stolen."

I think somebody said the other day he was a member of Balt/D.C. chapter. It may very well be that with many papers prohibiting their guys from voting on awards, the BBWAA must turn to some national guys to fill in the gaps.

Dan R, you beat me to it. Actually I was going to go with his Catcher Interference numbers, but I couldn't find them in time to be funny. (Technically there might not be enough time left before the sun burns out for that to be funny, but I was beaten to the quote nonetheless.)
   15. Designated Sitter (GGC) Posted: November 18, 2008 at 10:22 PM (#3011872)
Makes sense, SoSH. IIRC, FOX plucked him from a Maryland paper.

My guess is that he meant "stole 20 bases." Besides, I'd blame the editor for not catching that. I'm working under the assumption that Ken doesn't just click submit and this winds up on the FOX website.

Boy, you're not kidding:

I agree with the yankee hater and all who know that FOX SPORTS is the worst. . . Joe Buck is not sure if he is a ham sandwich or a flight of stairs.

As poetry, that's right up there with anything the Beats ever wrote. And it's tragic that the phrase is too long it make it my screen name.

Jon, that's great. But it's been said before.

Because if you drop the stolen base bar to 15 you have to include Wright
If you drop the GG requirement you get Kemp, Rios and Abreu
woooo what a list
   20. Raleigh Horn Posted: November 18, 2008 at 11:38 PM (#3011904)
Wow, some serious nitpicking here.

Yes, those numbers are arbitrary, but the point is clear to most normal readers, namely that he's "well rounded," ie, he steals bases and hits home runs, he hits, he runs, he drives guys in.

Yes, his stats are inflated by being on the Sox (more guys to drive in, more guys driving him in). But he was one of the top 3 players on one of the top 4 teams in the league. Close enough ;)

MVP! MVP!

If you drop the hits to 170, you get Carlos Beltran AND Grady Sizemore.

courtesy monty python:

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable.

Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.

David Hume could out-consume
Wilhelm Freidrich Hegel,

And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed.

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.

Plato, they say, could stick it away--
Half a crate of whiskey every day.

Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle.
Hobbes was fond of his dram,

And René Descartes was a drunken fart.
'I drink, therefore I am.'

Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker,
But a bugger when he's pissed.

How many players have won the ROY in their first year and the MVP in the 2nd and not gone onto the HOF? I'm not asking this rhetorically. I just assume players who do this are elite.

The list would be:

Pedroia 07-08
Howard 05-06
Ripken 82-83

Then there was Ichiro and Fred Lynn that won ROY and MVP in the same year.

I don't doubt that this is the case, because I've heard of it happening before. But I've never heard an answer to why this would be. What's the advantage of banning your writers from gaining pub for your publication by being a part of postseason awards? Are they afraid that they'll all be exposed for the morons that they are?

No, it's generally felt that sportswriters (hell, all journalists) should not be a participant, even tangentially, in the stories they are covering. It's the same reason why many papers have also nixed having the beat guy serve as official scorer, which was also once commonplace.

As a former newspaper writer/editor, and still a journalist, I tend to agree with that position. Though to be fair, as a former sportswriter I must be a moron, so I suppose my opinion matters little.

After RTFA, it's clear that he voted Morneau because he led the league in games played. Which is the Number Two Criteria, people!!

Correction: You're a former moron.

What you say makes sense. My experience with newspapers is limited to markets small enough that all our guys ever got to vote for was high school all-state teams.
