Royals.com: Francoeur is double-threat player in KC

CLEVELAND - Right fielder Jeff Francoeur, in his first season for the Royals, has already matched his career high in doubles at 40.

Francoeur’s double in the second inning of Friday night’s 2-1 loss to the Indians equaled his total for 162 games in 2007 with the Braves. That might have been his best all-around season as Francoeur also batted .293 with 19 homers and 105 RBIs.

This season, Francoeur has 15 home runs and 19 stolen bases, thus joining a select list of six Royals who had seasons with 40 or more doubles, 15 or more homers and 15 or more steals. The others: Amos Otis, ‘76; Hal McRae, ‘77; George Brett, ‘79; Johnny Damon, ‘00; and Carlos Beltran, ‘02.

“I hope I’m not going to stop at 40,” Francoeur said. “I give a lot of credit to Seitz [hitting coach Kevin Seitzer] and the guys here keeping on me, and making sure I get my work in every day. I feel like it’s been a good season so far, but I’m looking forward to finishing even stronger.”

2011 Alex Gordon is one steal away from this.

Frenchy is having a terrific year, but its only about as good as Gordon's "disappointing" 2008 season.

Ok, so the (much lamented) current sports nickname scheme is to take the first syllable of the last name and add -er.

Except, apparently, when that is already the last name, in which case you subtract the -er?

Yeah, he's both a threat to their quest for .500 and a threat to their ability to sign players who are actually good.

#2 Seitzerer.

I like that better than Seitz.

Can we turn this into a Alex Gordon is having a super awesome year thread? He's sixth in WAR in the AL in both WARs among position players and he is on fire right now. He's at .305/.378/.506 (143 OPS+ after last night. How much longer is he under club control? He'd be a real good building block to have around when the young guys start earning more playing time.

It is nice to see Gordon having a great year. Not a conventional guy to have in the leadoff spot, but I don't have a problem with that at all, he's getting more PAs, and its obviously suiting him.

But much better than Alex Gordon's three other disappointing seasons, right?

I think he has two more years, but they're said to be working on a long-term deal this winter.

Gordon is a great example for moving a player off a position he can't handle defensively. His offensive explosion dates almost to the day that the Royals sent him to the minor leagues to learn left field.

Careful now, this reasoning once applied to Alfonso Soriano.

EDIT: Add Brandon Inge to that club as well.

and Melky is 4 doubles away.

Let's make a group, as Bill James said, take any half decent player, pick out their BEST numbers, make those numbers the floor and you can group that guy with a bunch of MVPs/HOFers.

Let's look at that Frenchified 15-15-40 group, Frenchy is a corner OF with an OPS+ of 117, he has 1.8 WAR, far and away the worst of the "group."

How about a new group? 15 hrs, 15 sb, 35 doubles and a .300 average, that drops Frenchy and lets in Melky- Melky and a couple of guys lots better than Melky

Brandon Twinge was a .199/.260/.330 hitter as a catcher, .245/.317/.405 as a 3B

Gordon was a .248/.331/.413 hitter at 3B- if he shows the same *sustained* degree of improvement as Inge, the Royals would be ecstatic.
   16. Fernigal McGunnigle has become a merry hat Posted: August 30, 2011 at 03:48 PM (#3912297)
Royals batters have gone 15-15-40 six times. Bobby Abreu has gone 15-15-40 seven times.
   17. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: August 30, 2011 at 03:51 PM (#3912301)
Inge improved but his first season off the catcher position was by far his best, it didn't accurately represent his offensive performance going forward.

The stats show he was fine at 3B in 2007-8 (avg. to a little below).

I'd date the "offensive explosion", which is really just reaching what his minor league numbers suggested, to the Royals stopping dicking him around and letting him play.

no but until this year, his post catching performance was still far better than his catching performance.

The stats show he was fine at 3B in 2007-8 (avg. to a little below).

Gordon requested the move, though.

I don't think Gordon's struggles were a case of him being messed with. It was more like an unlucky streak that lasted several years. He had a terrible beginning to his rookie year, then had an encouraging sophomore season before suffering a badly timed hip injury in 2009. 2010 is when he requested the position change, and that's when he started hitting.

Until this year, Gordon was going to be my nominee for this generation's "Could I try this career again?" award.

Der Francouer since June 22 to August 29: .303/.359/.494/.853.

Uh-oh--what's that? What's that BABIP? .364?

Hey Jeffy! Can you spell U-N-S-U-S-T-A-I-N-A-B-L-E ??

edit: has anyone ever done a chart of BABIP as it related to the slash line? You drop that .364 to Francouer's career BABIP and he's hitting little better than he did as the worst player in the majors from 2008-2010.
