Royals’ Bale diagnosed with broken hand after punching door

Royals left-hander John Bale won’t be returning to active duty any time soon after breaking his pitching hand Friday night by punching a door at the team’s downtown hotel.

Bale apparently was frustrated by his slow recovery from a fatigued left shoulder. He returned early Sunday to Kansas City and is scheduled to undergo further examination Monday by club physicians.

“I’m not pleased, obviously,” manager Trey Hillman said before Sunday’s series finale against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. “Players have to think before they do things.

“They’ve got to think about how it’s going to affect the rest of their team, how it’s going to affect their ability to perform and how it’s going to affect the whole group. I’m hopeful that there’s something salvageable for him. We’ll just have to wait to see where it goes.”

His ERA is 7.63 this year, maybe he thought he'd help the team more by not pitching.

I'm sure hope it was a "door" and not some poor girl's skull. That's all I can assume from MLB players now outside of Roy "I always make time for sick kids no matter what" Halladay. People look back and dismiss all past players with, "Well, Ty Cobb was a sociopath, so players were bad back then, too." I think poor upbringings and syncophants make these athletes lose their perspective. It is pretty much just as bad in northeast Asia with the players being so revered. I remember a comment explaining how players have almost always been the very best growing up- pretty much until they reach the Show. Hence, they grow up thinking they are better than everyone else. I hope they remember that the game humbles us all one day.

My ignorance of the major league salary structure makes me wonder whether Bale saw the writing on the wall (or door) that he would be sent down. Magically, after punching the door, he can stay on the DL at a major league salary for a couple more weeks. I assume he'll be fined, but can the Royals refuse to pay him for a self-inflicted injury?

I dunno, it seems to have fixed the Royals' problem of having Bale in the bullpen.
