Royals’ Blaine Boyer took wheel of team bus after chunk of ice smashed windshield

Royals strength and conditioning coach Ryan Stoneberg shared what happened on Instagram.

“While driving from the airport to the hotel through brutal cold conditions, ice from the roof of the staff bus flew off and hit the windshield of the trailing bus,” Stoneberg wrote. “The windshield was smashed, glass flew in the face of the driver, and one of our players had to assist with steering the bus to safety on the highway. I am so glad that all our players are safe due to quick action of our team and the steady nerves of the driver.”

Wow. Scary pictures. I'm glad everyone is OK.

Everyone was ok, so we can make jokes, right? Something like, "Boyer drove for 60 seconds before Yost brought in Eric Skoglund to pass on the left."

EDIT: Huh. Turns out Skoglund is a starter. Shows you how much I know.

Blaine Boyer, take the wheel
Take it from my hands!

After three weeks of wondering what the h#*& the Royals wanted with Blaine Boyer and why they would DFA and trade a guy like Miguel Almonte and instead keep a 36 year old non-roster invitee who is blowing chunks, now I get it. Dayton Moore had a premonition that he would be needed to save lives.

OK, Dayton, now that Boyer has fulfilled his destiny, would you PLEASE cut him and bring in someone who can, you know, actually pitch?

Wonder if whomever was supposed to clear the ice off the bus will face charges.

A Prayer for Blaine Boyer?

Seems kind of harsh to cut someone who just saved the team from a fiery wreck. Next time the bus driver is incapacitated, you don't want players to refuse to help out of fear for their future with the Royals. I think you're stuck with him, at least until the next news cycle.

Blaine Boyer

If this baseball caper hadn't worked out, with that name he always had a future as a daytime soap star.

Whenever I see Ryan Stoneberg’s name, I assume he was the Ryne Sandberg character in a Flintstones episode about the 1984 NLCS.

“Barney! Quit ####### around with Leon Durham’s glove!”

Glad this wasn't like the Angels accident that seriously injured Buck Rogers.

#7 is exactly what I thought about #5. And maybe exactly what #5 thought in the first place.

Blaine has given up 18 runs in 5 innings this year, so it's good that he can contribute in some way at least.

Son, we live in a world that has buses, and those buses have to be guarded by men with guaranteed contracts. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Crispix? Boyer has a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for the pitching staff and you curse the front office. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know; that Boyer's existence on the roster, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, *saves lives*. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want him on that bus. You need him on that bus.
