`Royals coming to grips with possibility that Salvador Perez might miss entire season

Royals All-Star catcher and five-time Gold Glove winner Salvador Perez remains hopeful that he’ll be able to play this season, but he also knows that he has to be prepared for the possibility of missing the entire 2019 campaign.

Perez spoke with reporters at the team facility in Arizona on Saturday, one day after the team announced that an MRI revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm.

Why is this a big problem for KC? They're not going anywhere. Roll Gallagher and Viloria out there, and see if either can play.

KC is stupid and THINKS they’re going somewhere. That’s why they brought on a whole bunch of veteran mediocrities this winter (Billy Hamilton! Brad Boxberger! Wily Peralta! Chris Owings! Homer Bailey! Jake Diekman! Drew Storen!) and held on to guys with trade value (Salvy, Whit).

That sounds like a list of guys you bring in because you want to finish 4th instead of 5th.

Viloria would be making a big jump up from High A. He looks good, but I'd worry about his bat getting overwhelmed. I have no problem bringing him some vet that isn't going to make the team in another camp right now. I guess they could bring in Maldonado, although I think I'd like to see what Gallagher can do on a semi-regular basis.

Meh, I think they brought in some of those guys because last year they had to claim guys like Abraham Almonte off waivers and give them 150 PAs. They're still very thin in the upper minors and they need some stop gaps and hey, they can probably flip a few of those guys for more assets.

5--ZiPS says the best catcher in the Royals system (after Salvy) is a guy named Xavier Fernandez. He has a .248/.291/.365 slash line, okay defense, 0.9 WAR in 340 PAs. Is he anyone?

Since 2014 games started at catcher by Perez: 146, 137, 128, 113, 96. And this season might be 0. Not saying.............but I'm saying.

Bailey and Storen are even on minor-league contracts. Those 7 players cost them less than $17 M unless those two make the roster -- no idea what they'll get if they do. As everybody mentions, that's just bringing in bodies in hopes of not losing 100 games. 4 of those guys are relievers who couldn't even command $4 M contracts which is to say that they're innings eaters ... anybody think the Royals pen won't have a lot of innings to eat this year?

He's not a Top 30 prospect, but he has generally hit well in the minors. He's just a guy, but you never know.

Matt Wieters has to be pretty annoyed right now.
