Royals Designate Betancourt For Assignment

I imagine that a little bit of Dayton Moore died today…

Betancourt rejoined the Royals this past offseason after being included in the Zack Greinke trade to the Brewers after the 2010 season. The infielder was hitting .232/.260/.408 in 56 games with Kansas City this year.

Royals Designate Betancourt For Assignment
Clearly a typo or something, please ignore.

Okay, maybe it actually happened. KC Star:
“We have been living in a losing culture here for many, many years,” [manager Ned] Yost said. “We cannot get over the hump. In order for us to get over the hump, we have to have 25 guys that are solely invested in one goal, and that’s turning this organization around to become a champion. That’s it. It’s not about, ‘How much do I play?’ It’s not about, ‘Do I have a job?’...

“And Yuni did a great job for us, but he was a guy that wanted more playing time. He would get upset when he didn’t, but (Chris) Getz was playing good.
Well, golly gosh gee whiz, who could possibly have seen that coming?? How about me, and, well, everyone.

Whoa! Salvador Perez is back and he's still tearing the cover off the ball. Small sample but ya gotta love seeing that out of a 22-year-old C.

Great, now we can sign him in 2014.

I love that its not the four months of shitty baseball that caused them to cut him, its his attitude. That is so Dayton Moore.

That is so Dayton Moore.

It's all part of The Process. He'll have the last laugh some day, you just watch. It's all coming together.

The best part, of course, is that second baseman Johnny Giavotella (328/415/492 at AAA, after 338/390/481 there last year) is still not up.

I think because he had a bad attitude. They're trying to change the clubhouse culture, because that's why they've been losing of course. Mijares was known for being a pain in the neck in Minnesota.

In public at least, DM says he wasn't in their long term plans, and they weren't going to tender him, and they couldn't pull off a trade in time, so they want to look at some younger guys.

KC Star:
The Royals also tried to trade Mijares, although he won’t be eligible for free agency until after 2014. He is only owed roughly $310,000 for the remainder of this season but, club officials believe, could command $2.5 million next season through arbitration.

That was deemed too expensive when weighed against in-house alternatives.

“Mijares wasn’t going to be part of the long-term plan here,” Yost said. “[Francisley] Bueno has been throwing the ball real well, and he is more of an option as a long-term guy. We wanted to get him up here to look at.” ...

The Giants’ winning claim means every American League club, and most National League clubs, passed on the opportunity to acquire [Mijares] for the cost of his contract and the $20,000 fee.

“If we could have (traded him),” Moore said, “we would have. We just need to see some other guys. We have multiple people in our organization who think Bueno can be just as effective against left-handers and get right-handers out as well.

“We didn’t know if Mijares had that same capability.”
