Royals looking to build on strong finish to 2018

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals lost 104 games in 2018 despite finishing the season 20-14. They hope they can begin this season like they ended the last one, and not the way they’ve started in recent years.

“These guys made a lot of progress from the middle of August all through September,” Royals manager Ned Yost said Monday before the club’s first full-squad workout. “They played really, really good and exciting baseball.

“Does that mean we’re automatically going to come in here and pick up where we left off? No. We’re going to have to pick up where we left off. We’re going to have to work hard to continue that type of improvement. I’m real excited about it.”

For those of you who have ever wondered what “damning with faint praise” means….

finishing the season 20-14.

That is a 95 win season for a 162 game schedule, maintained over a 34 game pace. That is actually quite good, especially with a 38-90 start. Now there was a nice sampling of Orioles; Twins; White Sox; and Tigers in that last 34 games, but with a healthy sprinkling of Cleveland mixed in. I sense it was a small sample size and an easier schedule, but that 34 game run really is something to build on.

That season is like a guy who ends up the season very hot, to bring his season average up to .260. You never realize how well the guy did at the end of the year, because his overall average is so weak.

Yea, there is some excitement because that hot streak was coupled with when they actually started playing youngsters. The team will be much improved - but they can improve a lot and still lose 90+ games, which I would expect.

If the Royals went 20-14 from mid June through July, no one would have even noticed. Every bad team has a decent 30ish game stretch. The White Sox had a 21-12 mid season run. The Marlins had a 20-15 mid season run. As did the Tigers. 20-14, even for a bad team, just isn't that special and is likely indicative of nothing more than random chance.
