Royals: Mitch Maier beaned: 3 broken bones in face

Mitch Maier of the Kansas City Royals suffered three broken bones when hit in the face by a pitch from Cleveland Indians left-hander Zach Jackson in the fifth inning Wednesday night.

Maier was taken to a hospital for X-rays, which revealed the fractures below his right eye.

The 26-year-old returned to the Royals’ clubhouse after Kansas City’s 8-5 loss, his right eye swollen shut.

With runners on first and second and none out, Jackson threw a pitch up and in to Maier, who had squared around to bunt and could not get out of the way in time. The ball glanced off his ear flap before hitting his right cheek and nose, and Maier crumpled to the ground immediately.

“The pitch just got away,” Jackson said. “I was trying to throw a cutter down and away.”

and in such a meaningless game, too.

And when I say meaningless, I'm pretty sure that in the SportsCenter coverage of this, the person talking thinks Mitch Maier is the pitcher and Zach Jackson is the hitter.

This is also the 5 year anniversary of journeyman Marlins pitcher Kevin Olson getting nailed in the face by a liner.

Though the injury happened in June, now that I google it, I see that tomorrow will be the 5 year anniversary of him getting moved to the 60 day DL for it.
He would, miraculously, throw a couple rehab innings in the minors in September and made 10 good AAA starts the next year, but he would never make the bigs again.

It looks like Olsen did make three appearances with the Marlins in September 2003, but never made it back to the majors after that.

Not only did Kevin Olsen's career essentially come to an end when he got hit in the head with a line drive, but Todd Walker, the batter who hit the the line drive that got Olsen, promptly went into a 2 month slump in part because he was so badly shaken up by being the guy responsible for Olsen's injury.

I know nothing about Zach Jackson as a person, but I know two things about him as a pitcher: (a) He's not very good and (b) in the little I've seen of him, he seems to have real problems with command. I know there's an unwritten rule that you've gotta stand up for your teammates, but it would be pretty silly if this started some kind of beanball war.

A mediocre pitcher made a bad pitch and hit someone in the face. I feel horrible for Maier, but there's no reason to think anything else is going on here.

Nobody's been hit yet today, so hopefully cooler heads will prevail.
