Royals Promote Billy Butler

I don’t use the word “hero” very often, but Billy Butler is the greatest hero in American history.

Butler’s contract was purchased from Class AAA Omaha, and he was expected to be in uniform for tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Angels at Kauffman Stadium.

Butler, 20, is generally viewed as the organization’s top hitting prospect. He was batting .337 in 25 games at Omaha with six homers and 23 RBIs. He also has 18 walks for a .445 on-base percentage.

The Royals cleared space for Butler by placing first baseman Ryan Shealy on the disabled list. Shealy suffered a hamstring injury in Monday’s game while trying to score from second base on a single in the second inning.

Save us Billy Butler…you’re our only hope.

Not that it particularly matters, but Butler turned 21 years old last week (actually, 4/18).

Wow, what amazing news. Just as I was leaving to the ballpark, I checked in to BBTF one last time. Awesome. I'm going home to get the camera and I'll try to get some pictures of his BP if he's hitting.

He's a great prospect, but I like how the whole "prospect" thing works. For the last couple years, he's been the number 2 hitting prospect. Now that Alex Gordon is in the majors, Butler is the same guy he's always been, but now he's the top hitting prospect!!!

And now that Butler is in the majors, he has to relinquish the "top hitting prospect" crown. Well his brief interregnum must have been fun.

I think Butler's going to be a star. The Gordon/Butler era has arrived in KC.

Where does this phrasology come from?

The Simpsons.

When in doubt, assume it's a Simpsons reference. It's like answering "Wilt Chamberlain" when someone asks who holds the NBA record for whatever. Odds are you're right.

Homer Simpson goes to an "All You Can Eat" restaurant, and consumes a huge amount. But, being fat and greedy, he has not eaten "all he can eat" by the time the restaurant closes. Angered, he decides to sue, with the help of slimeball lawyer Lionel Hutz. Hutz congratulates Homer on sticking up for his right to have all he can eat, and tells him "Mr Simpson, I don't use the word hero very often, but you are the greatest hero in American history."

The case settles out of court.

FWIW, I've got my thoughts on the game posted.

I can just picture Billy Butler, surfing the internet late at night, stumbling on this site, seeing that this page has 17 hits, feeling good about that and clicking on it to see what we said.

Don't feel bad, Billy!

Until today, he was a minor leaguer. He'd be ecstatic at being linked to the Simpsons.

This is probably not the way Ryan Shealy envisioned his first month of the season.
