He could be a starting option in centerfield for the Royals, the park fits his skills much better and they have nothing. 9 different players started in CF for the Royals last season, none more than 31 games. Of those 9 only 2 were younger than Hamilton, Brett Phillips and Roselle Herrera - and Herrera couldn't beat out Hamilton in Cincy.

First time Dayton and I have ever been on the same page. I'm just gonna peak out the window and see if four horsemen are trotting by.

Great offseason so far, they’ve already signed Wily Peralta, Chris Owings and Billy Hamilton o god kill me now

now we have a new answer to that query: "When is the last time Billy Hamilton led his major league in steals?"

it was 1895, now it's 2019. congrats to the new Billy

Willie Wilson approves.

What is wrong with giving Phillips the job to start in 2019? I don't understand why a guy who people know is not going to hit gets the job over a guy who may not hit but might. And Phillips is a good cf with a fantastic arm.

5- It’s incredibly stupid. The 2019 Royals have to see which young players are for real and which ones they should cut—Phillips needs to be playing every day (as should OHearn, as should Dozier.)

Instead they’re gonna go with Billy Hamilton and Chris Owings and, idk, who’d be the Royalsiest pick for a first baseman, CJ Cron?

They’re very hard to root for.

Really surprised there wasn't more interest in him 1-2 WAR player for $5.5 million.

I wonder if he'll platoon in RF with Bonifacio. Or Boni could go to Omaha, he was pretty terrible after coming back from his PED suspension.

6--For first is Cris Carter NL Home run leader available?

For record I don't think Maverick will hit much in the majors because he won't make enough quality contact. But he MIGHT. Maybe. If something good happens to his approach.

Dayton just can't help himself. Phillips and Brian Goodwin should be fighting it out for whatever is left in the OF after Soler, Gordon and Bonifacio get their ABs.

If memory serves, the Royals already have the 2X defending AL Stolen base leader. Do we need this guy at $5M? I don't think so.

Is Phillips a good defender? I realize he is very fast, but what I've seen is a guy with tools but without skills in the OF.

Small sample size for sure on that.

Salaries being what they are these days, $5 million is 4th outfielder money.

(Cron's a Twin)

I think there's an argument for having Hamilton on a bad team, to help the outfield defense and encourage pitchers not to nibble so much.
(Terms appear to be 5.25m with another mil in incentives available)

He would make a lot of sense in the Jarrod Dyson role. Pinch runner / defensive replacement who hits just well enough that you don't mind giving him an at bat or two.

Yost has actually been really good about getting production out of that role without giving away too many at bats. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

This cannot be true. I was told Billy Hamilton should be psyched to get $3m to be forced to play for a team not of his choosing.
   16. McCoy Posted: December 10, 2018 at 09:48 PM (#5796424)
The Royals might very well be another team he doesn't want to play for as well.

Does he have really bad hay fever? Because if he doesn't, an extreme speed and defense centerfielder would be a good match for an extreme speed and defense oriented team.

11--all the coaches in the Brewers system raved about his defense and in really limited time he has some kind of surprising defensive metrics. Both bbref and fangraphs grade him out again acknowledging limited time. But the concern about Phillips making it was sufficient contact. The consensus was that that he defense and baserunning locked down already. He did make some 'wow' catches in his short time with the Crew and several AMAZING throws

So I suppose it was predictable that the Royals would do the mutual option thing since they always do that thing. Hamilton is signed for 2019 and a mutual option for 2020.

Does anybody know how plays out with regards to free agency. Hamilton only has four years of service time.

I think the Royals would retain his rights for 2020 and still could choose to non-tender or go through the normal arbitration process if the mutual option is not agree upon. Does that make sense?
   20. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: December 11, 2018 at 05:36 PM (#5796877)
The mutual option is just paper. They almost never get exercised. It is an accounting gimmick Dayton Moore does to defer money. The player gets the buyout even if he rejects the option typically.

But yes, he would go through the arb process.
