What is most perplexing to me about Julian Tavarez is not his childish antics on the mound or his karate kick, but how very well he pitched for the Rockies last year, in light of how poorly he pitched in his three seasons for the Giants. In 120.0 innings in 2000 Tavarez had a 4.43 ERA; which translated to a 134 ERA+. In only 54.7 innings in 1999, Tavarez had a 5.93 ERA; which translated to a 69 ERA+.

His 2000 season was all the more amazing when you look at his home/road splits: 3.96 ERA at Coors; 5.13 ERA on the road. His last season in San Francisco, Julian was notably better at home than on the road, too: 3.71 vs. 8.04.

Of course, a fair point to be made about these numbers is that they all represent a very small sample size. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Tavarez maintains his trend of pitching very well at home, this year at Wrigley.

Tavarez became the idiot not when he pumped his fist. He became an idiot when he threw down his glove and called Davis out. He became a bigger idiot when Davis answered his call and he responds with the "Matrix" maneuver. If you are going to challenge someone to a fight, don't be a sally and kick your opponent. With spikes on, no less. I would hate to see a good clean basebrawl lower itself to the level of an NBA altercation.
