Ryan Parker Songs: Jay Bruce Almighty (Video/Song)

Ok, ok…so it ain’t Rostam Batmanglij fronting Justice of the Unicorns to dish out some Upper West Side Soweto meets Hush Folk twangle.

He’s not the Pearl from Tennessee,
He’s not the Boss from New Jersey,
He’s not the Earle from Ohio State,
But his name is Bruce and his game is great,

He don’t sing in commercials like Bronson Arroyo,
He hits homers like Griffey and Dunn,
And he gives us more reason to have hope this season,
Cause we all believe he’s the one,
Who was called up from Louisville to live out and fulfill,
His destiny truly and mighty,
So in praise of his name I now stand and proclaim,
He is Jay Bruce Almighty,

Haven't heard the song, but I can't think of any player ever who's had a better first week in the big leagues. The 6:1 BB:K ratio stands out even more than the avg. or HRs.

Its certainly possible that Bruce is not a fluke - not a .500 hitter, but one of the very best hitters in the game today, and won't cool off much.

I was trying to think of players, that were superstars, and were among the very best players from the day they walked on the field. Pujols was one. Frank Thomas, I think. Going way back, Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio fit the bill.

Most others I could think of were merely good for their first season (Mantle, Mays, Aaron, etc), or had a cup of coffee in the majors where they weren't spectacular from day one (ARod).

Frank Robinson - another Reds outfielder.

Dwight Gooden.

Tom Seaver put up a 122 ERA+, got MVP votes, and appeared in the All-Star Game in his first season. He's probably not quite good enough to make the cut here though.

Here's a few:

Recent: possibly Eddie Murray & Jeff Bagwell

Way back: Hank Greenberg, Arky Vaughan, Lloyd Waner

Wade Boggs & Chuck Klein put up excellent #'s in about 1/2 season

Eddie Murray, Hank Greenberg, Arky Vaughn, and Lloyd Waner were not that great their first year in the majors - good, but nothing special. Their OPS+ ranged from 110 to 123, and none of them were in the top ten. Bagwell possibly.

And when Cincinnati misses the 2008 playoffs by a game or two, they can take comfort in knowing the ball club saved themselves millions in 2011.

I was thinking Kaline, but he had a mediocre cup of coffee when he was 18, then another weak season when he was 19, before his huge 20-year-old season.

BTW, how did Kaline get MVP vote(s) when he was 19, with a 276/305/347 line, for an 80 OPS+?

He's only played a week...
