Sabermetrics is in your parks eating your scoreboard

Mike Fast made us aware of this new feature Tuesday:“Run expectancy on the scoreboard at Minute Maid Park tonight.”

Astros put run expectancy on the scoreboard.

Yes, but how much work is it to slap a 0 up there and just leave it?

NOM NOM NOM.

If they were smart, they'd lowball it. Base it on the lowest set of expectations like park and team and opposing pitcher adjustments, or even outright lie. Then the fans can get excited more often when the expectancy gets exceeded.

Jeff luhnow, doing his part to destroy the sacrifice bunt forever.

Astros put run expectancy on the scoreboard.

Well, it is easier than putting actual runs on the scoreboard.

I decidedly lack confidence in them going forward, but they are 8th in the majors in runs at this point.

Wow.

Better that than "games until eliminated from playoff contention".

I like the idea, especially as someone who does like to constantly check the run expectancy, but can't help but wonder just how poorly the average fan will receive it. 0.53 runs with a 1B/1 out situation does not mean you're probably going to score a run this inning, which I think is something the casual fan may not get (hey 0.53 rounds up to 1!). These numbers include the chance of a big inning, which, when discussing run expectancy with some more casual fans who worship at the altar of "bunt em around and knock em in" they don't pick up on.

Every few years it seems there is a team in complete rebuild mode, with a preseason lineup that inspires writers to scream things about "historically bad" and such. But usually, while surely being bad, these teams don't end up "historically bad". I guess the lesson is that there is a lot of talent out there. Also, while not an Astros fan, I love me some Jose Altuve!

I have no idea why run-expectancy isn't on the screen during every major-league broadcast.

If a company sponsors it, a broadcast will show anything. Get on that, Welch: "Reason Magazine presents run expectancy!"

Why should it be? It would be wildly inaccurate for any individual inning.

"The Astros now have a run expectancy of 0.82 runs this inning. And speaking of expecting, check out First Response home pregnancy tests. See if you're safe or out... with First Response."
