SABR 39!

Let’s get ready to RUMMMMMMBLE!!!

We are looking at 10 days until SABR 39! Looking over the guest list, roughly 640 registrants, I see fewer Primates than I might expect: me, Dimino, Giacalone, CJaffe, Gleeman, Emeigh, Jacobs, a Heit, Bob T., Treder, McCullough, Webber, Birnbaum, Wendt, Matthew, Spira and Forman. Sure, there are a few more that post here, but those are the more regular guys. From BPro (that I can tell): Kahrl, Laurila, Bower, Davenport, JJaffe. Others: Neyer, Traven, Armour, Blau, Ruane, F.X., Fischthal, DSmith.

Clay Davenport - wow, I think I’ll bring my printout of the 1996 Davenport Translations (as emailed to me a decade ago) and have him autograph it.

I am seriously considering squeezing in a round of golf Thursday at dawn. Anyone up for that?

I hope more local Primates will crash the bar and hang out. Furtado, did you get a big sign that says BTF yet? Even the host Primate Szym is bowing out.

You missed fra paolo, Mahnken, Daly, and Rauseo. Wasn't Emslie in Toronto? I believe Tom Hanrahan posts at the HoM. There's also Vince Gennero - who doesn't really hang out with us, but then again neither do all the people listed above either.

I'll be in on Wednesday, but I'm going out to Bowie that night for the ballgame (if anyone else wants to go, LMK). There's also a game in Bowie Thursday morning at 11, but since I'm presenting at 3:30 that afternoon I don't think it's a great idea to have to try to get back in to DC in time.

Bowie is playing Connecticut. If the rotation holds, Erbe should be pitching for the Baysox against Daryl Maday for the Defenders. Bumgarner will miss the series (he'd be slotted in Monday at home) and Alderson would go Tuesday. Maybe we can root for a rainout or two. Martinez-Esteve is the only remotely interesting position player on the Defenders (or the Baysox, for that matter).

Bowie has a pitcher named John Mariotti. Wonder if his teammates call him Jay?

It might be better to go see Potomac Wednesday night - they're playing Myrtle Beach and Cody Johnson. Pitching matchup looks pretty interesting, too - Terrence Engles against Jacob Thompson.

I have an early DT printout as well (printed from rsb - thought it was '95). It may be looking for a new home - would there be any interest? (If so, preference given to Triangle primates, as they wouldn't necessarily require my going to the post office {I'm lazy}.)

My wife and I will be in DC all week, so anybody can give me a call when they show up if I'm not just milling around the hotel at that point.

I plan on bringing poker chips as well. And I'll try to grab a whiffle ball and bat before I leave so we don't have to search for one near the hotel again.

I will be there Wednesday, probably early afternoon. I'm heading back east Thursday night after work, going to be in CT for a few days, then start heading back south on Monday. Might shoot over to AC Monday night if anyone has interest.

Vinay should also be going, at least I hope so since he's my roommate! But I think he has to leave Saturday or something . . .

Well, you have to register, and pay, but I think it's worth every penny, IMO. I don't think there's ever been a presentation I've attended where at the end I thought 'Well that's a half-hour of my life I'm never going to get back'.

I'm arriving Wednesday, probably around 6.30-7, but if Primates aren't plainly visible in the hotel I'll just conserve my energies as I hate travelling by plane and it always leaves me in a mood.

Anything people are going to describe generally as "downtown DC" is going to be in the NW quadrant.

SW is basically the southern half of the National Mall plus the DC Waterfront.
SE is the southern half of Capitol Hill down to Nationals Park.
NE is the northern half of Capitol Hill (incl. Union Station) and nothing else most tourist would worry about.

To be honest, the presentations are nice (although there have been some I thought were a waste of time), but if you told me they were all canceled, I'd still go to the convention. I go to SABR for the people; the presentations are just a bonus.

Yeah. Starting with SABR members: myself, Anthony Giacalone, and Ned Garvin Male Prostitute (formerly deJesus freak, for-formerly true blue) live in the area. NGMP is in the city, I'm in Schaumburg, Gicacalone Naperville.

Scotto, Shredder, retroshitte, Moses Taylor live in Chicago. So does Vince Galloro, but he hardly ever posts on the site anymore. The Latowskis live in the area (I think meatwad lives in NW Indiana or something; I met Pops Freshenmyer at a Chicago meet-up once, not sure where Dan the Mediocre is). Charles S. lives in McHenry County. Cabbage and Hack Wilson live somewhere around. The Cheat lives in Schaumburg, according to the BTF map. -- actually, you could just check the BTF map. It's a bit out of date by now, but worth looking at.

EDIT: Fred Garvin? All this time I thought it was Ned Garvin.

I don't think any of them live in NW Indiana. Dan's in South Bend (Michiana) and I believe Meat is in the Lafayette area.

There's nothing of interest to most tourists and conventioneers east of the river (in either NE or SE) so I omitted mention of it.

"Southeast" was sometimes used as a shorthand for neighborhoods to avoid in DC in my early years there, but was it doubly inaccurate as there were plenty of neighborhoods to stay away from that weren't in SE.

The complete redlining of most of PG County is really sad. National Harbor is no further from downtown DC than Bethesda is, although a big part of the problem is what's between DC and National Harbour - a mixture of no man's land with some of DC's worst 'hoods. Also, Metro goes nowhere near there and for most people a bus ride through those same 'hoods to a Green Line station isn't going to convince many people to go there.

He could very well be the world's most inept cat burglar. It would be pretty damned funny to see him try. I'll let him out of his Ollie/Jurrjens bet if he scales a wall successfully. I am, however, confused by the idea that Chris has a big southern accent. Perhaps you have to be from up north to hear it.

Chris looks like Gary Busey more than Matt Damon.

Yep, Sam is right. Often it's free in the lobby and business areas, though. Valet parking ain't cheap, either.

There were 640 people registered as of July 16. As of about a month ago there was serious concern that the LCC wasn't going to meet its guarantees to the national, but registration has picked up.

Park in lots outside of the city center and take the Metro into the hotel. Or take public transit if you can. You won't really need a car over the weekend.

Park in lots outside of the city center and take the Metro into the hotel. Or take public transit if you can. You won't really need a car over the weekend.

Uh, yeah I will. I'm driving to the game Friday and have to work the Orioles game in Baltimore on Sunday. And I'll need to pick AJM up at the airport.

You know what would be nice? DC has great public transportation. And driving stinks. I would strongly discourage the use of vehicles.

Which airport? If it's National, he can just Metro into town.

I will have my vehicle (Saturn Vue, seats 5 comfortably), don't mind paying the freight at the hotel, and don't mind ferrying people around if need be.
