SABR 48 Pittsburgh Review

Mark Armour shares his SABR experience, and also provides the details on a fascinating new game, WAR war.  I think this may be bigger than blackjack.

Meanwhile, Joe Dimino and I started playing “WAR War” with the stacks of 1989 cards laying around.

If you have never heard of WAR War, don’t feel too bad. I sort of made it up on the spot, but I think, like Monopoly or Scrabble, it has a chance to become a craze.

They didn't pick a spot for next year? Odd

They have been waiting for the schedule to come out as it can affect the availability of hotels at various times.

I could only make it out to Pittsburgh for the Pirates game Friday night and the Saturday presentations, but I had a blast. And I found time to locate the Mr. Rogers statue and the Immaculate Reception monument.

Next time I'm there, I'll have to try a Primanti Bros. sandwich...

The convention business has changed since SABR first started holding them; hotels no longer have to go out of their way to attract a 500-600 person group to come to their facility. SABR used to be able to say "Hey, we'll be here on one of these three weekends, and we will let you know which one when the MLB schedule comes out"; the organization can't do that any more as the hotels require SABR to lock into a specific date, and MLB can't guarantee that a particular team will be playing at home on any date. Since the ballgame matters to the membership more than anything else, SABR's options are limited pretty much to two-team cities and/or major-minor league combos (although the membership has also indicated a clear preference for major league games).

Combine that with the increasing cost of holding a convention, especially in popular destinations, and SABR's alternatives shrink even further.

SABR has options. We are trying to get to San Diego, but at the moment the hotel options are prohibitively expensive and do not offer multiple weekends that would allow us to guarantee a ballgame. Both of those things have to change (a 2019 MLB schedule would take care of the second) and we have been in this position before and had a hotel come through. So its still possible.

In the meantime we have other options that might include returning to a city we have visited recently (like Chicago). There are other cities on the table as well.

Sorry whoever you are. David? It was a bit of a blur.

How dare you. Bubble gum cards at ten paces, sir!

OK, I'll bite. My biggest question is: what establishes hierarchy among the variety of base vs. subset cards (RB, AS, TL, TBTC)?

1989 Topps Baseball (792 Cards Total)

Best Card - Barry Bonds (162.8), 1 card total (#620)

Worst Card (HOF Edition) - Tony La Russa (-0.7), 1 card total (#224) - I think this is correct, can someone prove me wrong?

Wild Card - Hank Aaron (143.0 WAR), 1 card total (#663-TBTC)

Worst Wild Card (HOF Edition) - Lou Brock (45.3 WAR), 1 card total (#662-TBTC)

Most Important Player (emphasis on QLT) - Roger Clemens (139.6 WAR), 2 cards total (#405-AS, #450)

2nd Most Important Player (emphasis on QLT) - Mike Schmidt (106.8 WAR), 2 cards total (#100, #489-TL)

Most Important Player (emphasis on QTY) - Orel Hershiser (56.3 WAR), 4 cards total (#5-RB, #394-AS, #550, #669-TL)

Most Important Player (emphasis on both QLT & QTY) - Wade Boggs (91.4 WAR), 3 cards total (#2-RB, #399-AS, #600)

2nd Most Important Player (emphasis on both QLT & QTY) - Gary Carter (70.1 WAR), 3 cards total (#3-RB, #393-AS, #680)

3rd Most Important Player (emphasis on both QLT & QTY) - Andre Dawson (64.8 WAR), 3 cards total (#4-RB, #10, #391-AS)

Controversial Cards (my answer & reason):
Alan Trammell or no?#609 (70.7 WAR) - YES...Tigers Team Leaders Card & Trammell > Tanana
Tony Gwynn or no?#699 (69.2 WAR) - NO...Pirates Team Leaders Card
Mark McGwire or no?#639 (62.2 WAR) - Yes...A's Team Leaders Card & McGwire is visible & > Weiss
Roberto Alomar (67.1), Gary Carter (70.1), or both? Thereby beating Alomar's #206, but maybe losing or tying with Carter's #3, #393, or #680. Personally, I say it should be only an Alomar card since it's Padres Team Leaders.

500-600 people is the size of our professional society meeting here in Canada. We hold the scientific presentations on campus at the local university with social activities elsewhere which can sometimes be cheaper than trying to do things at hotels. If you have a local academic willing to facilitate, that would help grease the wheels a bit. Universities are trying to squeeze more revenue out of classrooms so the prices can be good in the summer. That might really work, for example, in a place like San Diego.

Atlanta just saying. Or even better Marietta and like the braves just call it Atlanta. There's a historic Hilton on a golf course in downtown Marietta that is just minutes away from sun trust. I'm pretty sure the rates would be on the cheaper side. Plus you'd be right next store to the gone with the wind museum!
