Sale placed on DL with shoulder inflammation

The Red Sox placed ace Chris Sale on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday (retroactive to Saturday) with mild left shoulder inflammation and recalled right-hander Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Sale was originally set to start Thursday vs. the Yankees, but instead Brian Johnson will take the ball when the American League East rivals square off at Fenway Park.

This kinda feels like a move that’s just meant to give Sale some extra rest.

Yeah, poor poor Yankees. No team in history has been as downtrodden as them.

His punishment for this self-pitying lachrymosity is learning the news that, like Noah Syndergaard, J.A. Happ has come down with hand, foot, and mouth disease.

sucks. he's been "shut down" like this before and came out the other side. Never with shoulder inflammation tho. Shoulder is the worst timeline.

mild left shoulder inflammation

Eh, the bursa is swollen. Get 2 cortisone shots and some physical therapy and he'll be fine. This is a super common injury. At least this is what I am hoping..

Denny McLain won 55 games in 2 years while getting cortisone shots. Ain't no big deal.

I like Andy's optimism that this year will end for the Sox the way 1968 did for the Tigers.

Just looking at the 1968 Tigers BBRef page, based on the top 12 WAR guys that has to be one of the ugliest teams of all time. Kaline and Wilson are the only guys who aren't appallingly ugly.

Yeah but he laid down some huge money at +350 that he would return to all star form after the injections, he was really motivated.

Are you sure you are looking at the right page? I mean beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but Norm Cash and Mickey Stanley are anything but appallingly ugly. Several others are at worst average looking.

Don Mossi pitched for the Tigers from 1959-1963, and that's the kind of ugly that lingers for years.

Sale allowed just one run in his last 39 innings. I really hope this is just to get him some rest.

lifetime Chris Sale

March-July 67-33, ERA well under 2
August-Oct 25-33 ERA in the mid 3's

The guy Boston can't afford to lose is Mookie Betts, yet the Red Sox are foolishly allowing him to run all over the field and even stand in the batters box with very little protection from injury. At a minimum, they should encase him in bubble wrap for the games, if not 24/7. Betts is an excellent athlete, but it might take him a few games to become fully comfortable, so the Red Sox should probably start the Mookie Wrap Treatments ASAP.

edit #17--ERA well under 3

The thing that worries me about this is that it's right before the Yankees series. If it was really a 10-day break, a la Pedro, I would think they'd have waited until after this series.
   21. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: August 02, 2018 at 09:11 AM (#5719510)
Possibly. The first thing I thought of though was 2001. Due I think to a rain out the Sox and Yankees had a situation where Pedro and Mussina were scheduled to pitch against each other for the third time in two weeks. Torre made the decision to skip Moose due to the intensity of the games. He took a lot of heat for it as I recall but Pedro hit the DL soon after and Moose did what he usually did.

Maybe that's not what's at work here. You might be right and hey, this is concerning. But if you want to give Sale a break this is the team to give him a break against.

Here's the 4D chess theory:

IF everything plays out as it is right now, the Yankees would be the WC (and, assuming they win the WC game) and play the Red Sox in division series. It's possible they just don't want the Yankees facing Sale any more times than necessary before the playoffs + want to give him a rest... hence, this is precisely why they timed the DL stint the way they did.

[removes tin foil hat]

And that team didn't even have Ed Brinkman on it!

In that picture Pat Dobson looks exactly like his contemporary Elliott Gould. Not handsome by Hollywood standards but not bad.

You aren't alone. I actually said the same thing over at Sox Therapy. There is a very good chance that these two teams are playing in the ALDS at this point so why give them an extra look?

It could be that they waited until after they were done making deals ahead of the deadline, so as not to seem more desperate when negotiating.

Or maybe Sale has shoulder inflammation, and putting him on the DL has something to do with that.
