Samardzija exits after just one inning vs Rockies with right shoulder tightness | NBCS Bay Area

Jeff Samardzija was pulled after just one inning at Coors Field on Tuesday night due to right shoulder tightness. He gave up two runs in the first and his fastball averaged just 91 mph, a significant dip from recent starts. After the inning, Samardzija met with manager Bruce Bochy, pitching coach Curt Young and head trainer Dave Groeschner. When the call was made to the bullpen, Samardzija grabbed one of his bats and snapped it over his knee.

Derek Rodriguez, son of Ivan, made his MLB debut in this game and collected his first hit and RBI with a double to right.

Oh, and he was the pitcher who relieved Samardzija, and then later left due to his own injury, taking a batted ball off the leg.

A few days agao I was watching a replay of the 2005 USC-Notre Dame football game (the "Bush Push" game) that Samardzija played in, and it made me appreciate how far TV technology has come since then. The graphics and picture quality looked more like the 1975 World Series than any live sporting event now.

Great way to loosen up one's shoulder.

Maybe it's because I'm a weak guy, but the idea of snapping a baseball bat over my leg like Bo Jackson sounds both impossible and incredibly painful. I don't think I could snap a stick of balsa wood half as thick.

Bat handles are pretty thin these days. I don't think you need that much strength if you get the leverage right; a 34 inch bat is a pretty long lever. I still think it's going to hurt.
